“Humans don’t like to forget,” says archivist at the Al-Ahmed Mahmoud Library in Chinguetti, Mauritania. Chinguetti, located on the old pilgrimage route to Mecca, is now disappearing beneath the expanding Sahara Desert. This is not the first time. He previously had two cities on this site, the first of which was founded in 777 AD, but both disappeared beneath the sand dunes.
