NASA is set to launch a next-generation telescope into space on Sunday that will have the ability to study hundreds of millions of stars and billions of galaxies. This discovery could provide insights into dark energy, dark matter, and other mysteries of the universe.
The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is scheduled to launch from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 7:26 a.m. ET on Sunday, aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket.
NASA will provide live coverage of the launch on various platforms starting at 6:20 a.m. ET.
This innovative observatory, often compared to the iconic Hubble Space Telescope, is expected to revolutionize our understanding of the universe and our place within it.
The telescope is expected to survey more of the sky than any previous space telescope, providing panoramic views of the universe, exploring uncharted regions of the Milky Way galaxy, and identifying over 100,000 planets orbiting other stars during its five-year mission. This exploration of dark matter and dark energy could offer valuable insights into these enigmatic aspects of astrophysics.
Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson stated, “Some of the most long-standing mysteries in modern astrophysics are: What is the nature of dark matter and what is the nature of dark energy? We have an idea, but we don’t know what it is. This telescope will try to provide the best data available to address those questions.”
The $4.3 billion mission, in development for nearly two decades, is set to launch ahead of schedule, overcoming challenges posed by last year’s pandemic and government shutdowns.
This would mark a significant achievement for NASA’s flagship missions, especially given the obstacles faced during recent global events.

Once deployed, the Roman Telescope will journey for over three months to its designated location approximately 1 million miles from Earth, at the Lagrangian point known as L2. This will position the telescope in a stable orbit, allowing it to capture images alongside NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, set to launch in 2021.
While often compared to the Hubble Telescope, the Roman Telescope boasts superior capabilities, able to survey the sky 1,000 times faster than Hubble and capture images with a scope 100 times larger.
The mission includes three major surveys, with the first lasting over a year focusing on the Galactic Bulge, the dense, star-filled core of the Milky Way. Subsequent surveys will delve into dark matter and dark energy, aiming to reveal the mysteries behind these elusive phenomena.
Dark matter, invisible but influential, constitutes a substantial portion of galaxy matter, while dark energy is believed to drive the universe’s accelerated expansion.

The telescope’s name honors Nancy Grace Roman, NASA’s first astronomy director, recognized for her contributions to modern space astronomy. The advantages of space-based telescopes over ground-based alternatives, like the ability to avoid atmospheric interference, are highlighted through her legacy.
Roman, an influential figure in space exploration, was posthumously commemorated in 2020 with the naming of this new telescope, two years after her passing.
