NASA has announced that it will proceed with undocking the unmanned Boeing Starliner spacecraft by Sept. 6 after completing its review.
Last week, NASA revealed that the company’s two astronauts, who traveled to the International Space Station (ISS) on Starliner in June, are set to return to Earth on a SpaceX spacecraft early next year. source
Due to issues with Starliner’s propulsion system, the capsule encountered malfunctions during its flight to the ISS, leading to the decision that it was too risky for a crewed return.
NASA anticipates that Starliner’s return to Earth will take approximately six hours, from undocking to landing at White Sands Spaceport in New Mexico. Blog Post
A ground team will guide the spacecraft remotely through the necessary maneuvers for a safe undock, re-entry, and parachute landing in the southwestern United States.
The agency stated that Starliner has successfully completed the entry and landing of a drone during two orbital test flights.
