New Study: Knee Braces, Hydrotherapy, and Exercise Among Most Effective Non-Drug Treatments for Knee Osteoarthritis
Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a common joint disease impacting millions of older adults, leading to pain, stiffness, and mobility issues. While many patients turn to anti-inflammatory drugs for relief, these medications can come with serious risks.
In a comprehensive analysis of 139 clinical trials involving roughly 10,000 individuals, researchers compared 12 different non-drug treatments for KOA. Among these treatments were knee braces, hydrotherapy, orthotics, kinesiology tape, water-based therapies, exercise, and ultrasound.
Interestingly, knee braces emerged as a standout performer, significantly reducing pain and stiffness while improving physical function. Moreover, hydrotherapy and regular exercise also showed promising results in alleviating pain and enhancing mobility.
Additionally, high-intensity laser therapy and shock wave therapy demonstrated efficacy in specific cases, while ultrasound consistently ranked lower in treatment comparisons.
The study’s findings suggest that simple, accessible treatments like knee braces, hydrotherapy, and exercise may offer substantial benefits for managing KOA without resorting to drugs that carry potential health risks.
Researchers highlighted the need for future studies to explore combinations of treatments for optimal results and to evaluate cost-effectiveness. They emphasized the importance of prioritizing evidence-based, non-pharmacological approaches like knee braces, hydrotherapy, and exercise in the management of KOA.
