arctic: Area included in the Arctic Circle. The edges of that circle are defined as the northernmost point where the sun is visible on the northern winter solstice and the southernmost point where the midnight sun is visible on the northern summer solstice. The Arctic Highlands are the northernmost third of the region. The area is covered in snow for most of the year.
biology:Study of living things. Scientists who study them are known as biologists.
brain waves: electrical signals generated through the coordinated activity of billions of nerve cells in an animal's brain. When charted, signals usually look like waves or spikes.
chronobiologist: Scientists who study circadian rhythms.
Co-author: One of a group (of two or more people) who together create a work of authorship, such as a book, report, or research paper. Not all co-authors contributed equally.
digest: (noun: digestion) The breaking down of food into simpler compounds that the body can absorb and use for growth. Some wastewater treatment plants use microorganisms to digest, or break down, waste so that the decomposition products can be recycled for use elsewhere in the environment.
electrode: A device used to conduct electricity and make contact with a nonmetallic part of an electrical circuit, or a device used to make contact with something through which an electrical signal passes. (In electronics) Part of a semiconductor device (such as a transistor) that can emit or collect electrons (negative charge) or holes (positive charge), or whose movement can be controlled.
indigenous:Grows wild in a certain region. (in anthropology) An adjective (and capitalization) that describes people who have lived in an area for many years and developed a culture that reflects the resources, climate, and ecosystem of that place.
Insight: The ability to accurately and deeply understand a situation simply by thinking, rather than deriving solutions through experimentation.

neurobiologist: A scientist who studies cells and function in the brain and other parts of the nervous system.
neuroscientist: A person who studies the structure and function of the brain and other parts of the nervous system.
physiological: Pertains to the field of biology that deals with the daily functions of living things and how their parts work. Scientists working in this field are known as physiologists.
predator: (adjective: predatory) A creature that preys on other animals for most or all of its food.
REM sleep: A period of sleep named after rapid eye movement (REM). People dream during REM sleep, but their bodies do not move. In non-REM sleep, breathing and brain activity slow down, but a person can still move around.
tundra: A cold, usually low-lying region of the far north. The subsoil is permanently frozen. In summer, the top layer of tundra soil melts to support low-growing mosses, lichens, grasses, shrubs, and trees (some only a few centimeters tall).
