Recent research suggests that taking statins can potentially lower the risk of dementia in individuals with type 2 diabetes. A study conducted in Denmark over a 10-year period, involving more than 132,000 participants, found that those who initiated statin therapy within five years of being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes had a lower likelihood of developing dementia from any cause.
The study further highlighted that the sooner individuals commenced taking statins, the greater the benefits observed. Those who started statin treatment within a year of diabetes diagnosis were 15% less likely to develop dementia compared to those who did not take statins. Statin initiation between 1 to 5 years post-diagnosis also showed a 10% reduction in dementia risk.
Statins, commonly prescribed worldwide to lower LDL cholesterol levels and prevent heart attacks and strokes, have shown to play a role in reducing the risk of cognitive decline and dementia linked to elevated LDL cholesterol levels.
Atherosclerosis, the process of blood vessels in the brain becoming blocked, is reduced by statins, thereby preventing parts of the brain from experiencing reduced blood flow, a known cause of vascular dementia, according to Professor Riyaz PatelCardiologist at University College London as reported by BBC Science Focus.
Professor John Hardy, a neurogeneticist renowned for his team’s Alzheimer’s disease research, stated that while the findings are interesting, they are not definitive, as mentioned in BBC Science Focus. Additionally, Professor Isabel Gonsalves, a cardiologist at Sweden’s Skåne University Hospital not involved in the study, agreed that the observational nature of the study does not prove that statins prevent dementia.
Nevertheless, Gonsalves acknowledges the potential significance of the findings, considering the wide availability and affordability of statins. She believes that these findings should guide discussions between patients and healthcare providers, especially for individuals with type 2 diabetes who are already at a heightened risk of dementia.
