In 1770, inventor Wolfgang von Kempelen claimed to have created a machine that could skillfully play chess against human opponents. His device, known as the Mechanical Turk, defeated many challengers, including Napoleon his Bonaparte and Benjamin his Franklin, and caused much surprise and debate about how it worked. However, it was eventually revealed to be a hoax with a human chess master lurking behind it.
Mechanical Turk raises interesting questions about how humans perceive technology.
