New research aims to rejuvenate old batteries rather than discard or recycle them

Injecting chemicals can make used lithium-ion batteries operational again. The one-step process could reduce waste and increase the supply of batteries needed for electric vehicle fleets.
As batteries age, they lose some of the charged particles that store energy, reducing their ability to hold power. Researchers at car giant Toyota say injecting certain chemicals can reverse this type of deterioration, although it won’t repair structurally damaged batteries.
