Widespread Fuel Leak on River Taff Prompts Urgent Advice to Close Windows and Doors
A significant fuel leak on the River Taff has sparked a warning for people to keep their windows and doors closed to prevent exposure. Natural Resources Wales (NRW) has reported that nearly 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) of the river have been affected by kerosene contamination.
The initial incident, impacting at least a mile (1.6 km) of the river, was first identified on a Saturday morning. NRW is actively working to pinpoint the source of the leak, halt further pollution, and gather crucial evidence to address the situation effectively.
Residents in the area, like Eurig Thomas from Tuff’s Well in Rhondda Sion Taff, have described the smell resembling that of a petrol station, raising concerns about the impact on their community and local environment.
Efforts are underway to contain and mitigate the spread of the leak by providing absorbent material. Despite some improvements, individuals like Sarah Llewellyn continue to experience discomfort from the lingering effects of the pollution.
The South Wales Fire and Rescue Service has been engaged in addressing the crisis, with Gareth Llewellyn emphasizing the long-term nature of the recovery process. Up to 25,000 liters of kerosene have entered the river, posing a significant challenge for environmental remediation efforts.
Gareth Llewellyn, a former hazardous materials and environmental protection officer, highlighted the complexity of the situation, noting that complete restoration may take years to achieve. The impact on wildlife and ecology in the affected area has been severe, with local residents expressing deep concern for the future of their community.
