As the shipping industry seeks ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, companies are experimenting with cleaner fuels made from cashew shells and other biomass to power ships, but for an industry that burns hundreds of millions of tonnes of fossil fuels each year, such biofuels are unlikely to come in sufficient quantities to make a big difference.
“The shipping industry is trawling the desert looking for something that works with existing infrastructure,” he said.
