Much of the sun’s heat is trapped in the Earth’s atmosphere

Earth’s atmosphere currently traps more than twice as much excess heat as it did in 1993, and scientists are increasingly concerned about the impact on the world’s oceans.
The Earth’s energy imbalance is a measure of how much excess heat there is in the climate system. It is the difference between the amount of energy entering the Earth’s atmosphere from the Sun and the amount of energy radiated back into space.
