The first father and son duo to win the World Sheepdog Trials together expressed their disbelief at their double victory. Farmer David Howells and his 19-year-old son Jack, hailing from Saimaa, Neath Port Talbot, triumphed at the competition held in Scotland last weekend. Among a field of approximately 300 competitors from 34 countries, David clinched the world title with his skilled border collie, Wyvern Pip, while Jack secured the young handler world title with his trusty companion, Sidros Voss. In an interview with BBC Radio Wales, David admitted his astonishment at the unexpected win, describing the experience of sharing the victory with his son as surreal. This historic achievement marks the first instance of a father and son claiming both prestigious titles at the same World Trials event. Reflecting on their success, David emphasized the importance of their farm life and the integral role of sheepdogs in their daily routines. “Living on a hill farm with numerous sheep presents its own set of challenges. To combine our passion for farming with the thrill of competitive sheepdog trials is truly special,” David remarked. He expressed immense pride in Jack’s dedication to the family tradition, noting his son’s early immersion in sheepdog training at the age of 10. Despite the disruptions caused by the pandemic, Jack’s intensified involvement at home allowed him to sharpen his skills and deepen his connection with the sheepdogs.
