Apple’s new iPad mini introduces different performance capabilities across its storage configurations, along with a relocated front camera and higher prices than earlier models. The 512GB version includes a dual 16-core Neural Engine, while the 128GB and 256GB models use a single 16-core NPU and a slightly different CPU configuration.
Different Neural Engine configurations
Faster memory speeds also benefit on-device AI applications, but the Neural Engine is the more important component. Apple says the 512GB configuration will feature the dual 16-core Neural Engine used in the iPhone 18 Pro. The 128GB and 256GB versions will instead have a single 16-core NPU.
The CPU configuration also differs between the models. The 128GB and 256GB versions have five CPU cores rather than six.
Front camera moves to the long edge
Apple continues to use 12-megapixel cameras on both the front and back of the tablet, but it has changed the front camera’s position. For vertical video calls, the camera is now located on the long side rather than the short side. People who frequently use an iPad for FaceTime may need some time to adjust.
Pricing and availability
The base model costs $699 and includes 128GB of storage and Wi-Fi connectivity. The 256GB version costs $100 more, while the 512GB model costs $300 more. A nano-texture display adds another $100, although that option is available only with the 256GB and 512GB versions. Cellular connectivity brings the 128GB model’s price to $849.
The 2026 pricing represents another increase for Apple. The seventh-generation iPad mini launched in 2024 at $499, but its price later rose to $599. The new model costs $100 more than that current price while adding several upgrades.
Pre-orders for the new iPad mini will begin Wednesday, October 28, at 10:10 a.m. PT. The devices will reach customers and stores on November 6.
