Discord Introduces New Age Verification System

Discord has implemented a new age verification system that is designed to accurately determine the age of its users. The system categorizes users into different age groups, including adults (18 years and older), teens (13 to 17 years old), and an “unconfirmed” group for users where age data is insufficient.

This update comes after previous plans for age checks faced backlash from users concerned about privacy. Discord’s original plan required users to upload IDs or scan their faces to access age-restricted content, but the system has now been revised to offer more privacy-friendly options, following user feedback.

Discord’s CTO and co-founder, Stanislav Vishnevskiy, stated that the platform is committed to providing age verification options that meet high privacy standards. Users will now have more control over how their age is verified, with additional methods beyond facial age estimation or ID scanning.

For users in the teen age group, Discord has implemented strict privacy measures. Message requests from non-friends will be directed to a separate inbox, and users will receive alerts about friend requests from mutual connections or people outside their immediate server. Certain images and age-restricted content will be blocked or blurred, ensuring a safer online environment for teens.

Improved Age Verification Process

While over 90% of Discord users are not required to verify their age, adults who wish to access age-restricted content can now easily prove their age if they have been incorrectly classified as teenagers or unverified. These users have multiple options available to verify their age and gain access to restricted content.
