Elon Musk’s AI startup Xai has unveiled Grok-3, the latest iteration of chatbots integrated with former Twitter, X.
The debut of Grok-3 comes at a crucial time in the AI Arms Race as Musk prepares to compete with Chinese AI companies Deepseek, Microsoft-Backed Openai, and Google. Musk’s bot is not as popular as Deepseek’s chatbot, which recently caused a stir in the stock market, as well as Openai’s Chatgpt and Google’s Gemini.
Grok-3 is being rolled out to Premium+ Subscribers of X, a social media platform owned by Musk. Xai is also introducing a new subscription tier, SuperGrok, for users accessing the chatbot through the mobile app and glok.com website. Chatbots created by X users can generate text and images with fewer restrictions on sexually suggestive content, vulgarity, or replication of famous people. Users can mimic politicians, create deepfakes of celebrities, and manipulate copyrighted materials using chatbots.
“Grok-3 is in a league of its own,” Musk said in a live stream with three Xai engineers. He expressed confidence that the new model will surpass its predecessor, Grok-2, with computing power exceeding the AI industry benchmark test. Musk described the bot as “AI seeking the best truth, even if it contradicts political correctness.” He is known to share misinformation with X’s 200 million followers regularly.
Musk mentioned that the bots utilize a “big brain” mode for more complex research tasks. The latest release introduces a smart search engine called DeepSearch, aimed at enhancing Xai’s ability to provide thoughtful responses to user queries. This tool facilitates research, brainstorming, and data analysis capabilities, demonstrated through live streams. Two weeks ago, Openai introduced a large language model that can engage in human-like research for paying subscribers. Google has also enhanced its Gemini with research features.
“With the launch of GROK-3, Xai reenters the open-source LLMS leadership race. We have worked diligently to maximize our potential,” said Gil Luria, managing director at Da Davidson.
As competition in AI intensifies, Xai is ramping up training for more advanced models, expanding data center capacity, and raising substantial funds. Musk proudly boasts of the supercomputer cluster in Memphis, Tennessee, known as the “Colossus.”
However, Luria expressed skepticism about the incremental improvements in the GROK-2 model, questioning the justification for the vast resources required for its training.
After the newsletter promotion
Last week, an investor consortium led by Musk invested $97.4 billion to acquire Openai’s non-profit assets.
In addition to Xai, Musk is actively involved in reshaping the US federal government under Donald Trump. When asked about his Washington efforts on the day of Grok-3’s release, the chatbot responded with insights into Musk’s approach, legality, and ethics. Musk’s actions align with the broader Trump administration agenda to streamline government operations, but they are unique in their controversy due to Musk’s personal involvement.
