Keir Starmer emphasized the importance of media taking control of their work and being compensated as artificial intelligence technology continues to reshape the economy and society in Britain.
He acknowledged journalism as the “lifeblood of democracy” and pledged to safeguard press freedom, ensuring that the influence of digital technology does not undermine the essential role of journalists and publishers in upholding democratic values.
Starmer, in launching the Journalism Matters campaign by the News Media Association, highlighted the significance of AI, creative industries, and media in the government’s economic growth strategies, aiming to strike a balance in industrial policy with collaborative efforts across departments.
He stressed the principle that publishers should retain control over their work and deserve fair compensation, particularly in light of the role of AI technology, crucial for a robust media environment where reliable information remains paramount.
The government’s plans to allow AI companies to gather content from publishers and artists faced opposition, with concerns raised by groups like the BBC. The battle between tech companies and content creators over the usage of online content for AI training models underscores the need for a balanced approach.
While the government aims to attract tech investments with substantial funding in UK data centers, challenges persist in reconciling copyright concerns with AI advancements. Starmer mentioned the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act as a step towards ensuring a fairer relationship between tech giants and other stakeholders.
A recent study from the Reuters Institute for Journalism revealed a growing trend of news avoidance, posing challenges for the news industry. Despite this, Starmer commended the resilience of the UK news sector, comprising over 900 local and national titles, reaching a significant portion of the population.
He praised the unwavering scrutiny from journalists in holding elected officials accountable, emphasizing the vital role of the Fourth Estate in a functioning democracy. Starmer paid tribute to journalists worldwide risking their lives to uphold democratic values, acknowledging the sacrifices made in pursuit of truth.
Concerns over SLAPPs and delays in addressing them were highlighted, yet Starmer reaffirmed the government’s commitment to defending press freedom and combating strategic litigation intended to silence investigative reporting, ensuring access to justice prevails.
