The family of Michael Schumacher has successfully sued the publishers of a magazine for publishing an AI-generated interview with the F1 champion.
The German celebrity magazine Die Aktuelle featured an article titled “Michael Schumacher, First Interview!” on its April 2023 cover, claiming that the quotes attributed to Schumacher were created by AI and sounded very realistic.
A family spokesperson, Sabine Kehm, confirmed that the legal action was successful, but did not provide further comment. The compensation amount was reported to be 200,000 euros.
The German publisher Funke Magazines apologized to Schumacher’s family for the article and dismissed Die Aktuelle’s editor-in-chief Anne Hoffmann. Funke’s managing director Bianca Pohlmann stated that the article did not meet journalistic standards expected by the publisher and its readers.
In December 2013, Schumacher sustained severe head injuries in a skiing accident in the French Alps, resulting in his private care at home in Switzerland since September 2014.
Schumacher, 55, retired from F1 in 2012 after a successful career with Ferrari, winning multiple championships. He has been a revered figure in the world of motorsport for his achievements.
