Microsoft Introduces Copilot+ PC for AI-Accelerated Workloads

Microsoft recently announced the launch of Copilot+ PC in 2024, aimed at providing users with Windows systems optimized for running AI-accelerated workloads locally.

Although the new Surface PC models released by Microsoft do meet the requirements for Copilot+ PC branding, they have been named differently, as confirmed by Brett Ostrum, Surface’s corporate VP.

Ostrum stated that the new Surface computers “will not be called Copilot+ PCs” but emphasize the focus on delivering hybrid AI solutions at the edge.

Key specifications for Copilot+ PCs include 16 GB of RAM, 256 GB of storage, and an integrated neural processing unit (NPU) capable of over 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS).

The Surface Pro 12-inch (2nd edition) and Surface Laptop 13-inch (2nd edition), set to launch on October 13th, are powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Plus processors and feature Qualcomm Hexagon NPUs rated at 80 TOPS.

According to Kedar Kondap, Qualcomm’s senior vice president of computing, the aim of Copilot+ PC is to provide an enhanced AI experience by leveraging NPUs to deliver powerful performance.

The Evolution of AI PCs

Initially marketed as a “class of AI PCs and laptops,” the Copilot+ PC is recognized as the fastest and most intelligent Windows PC. Although the landing page has been redirected to the “Performance PC” page, the Copilot+ PC branding continues to be highlighted as a benchmark for cutting-edge AI capabilities.
