Last year, inventors from Britain came up with a variety of innovative ideas, including a vacuuming robot dog, a flat-pack coffin, and a cookie-meets-cake combination.
According to a Guardian analysis of patent applications from the Intellectual Property Office (IPO), there were 5,955 published applications in 2023 involving UK-based inventors.
Some of the notable inventions include the reclining computer table by Alex May from London. Designed with a downward-facing computer monitor, the table can be used while sitting or standing, providing a comfortable computing experience, especially for those with back pain.
After experiencing prolonged back pain due to a coronavirus infection in 2022, May realized the potential benefits of his invention for various medical conditions. The patented model is now in the process of being launched as an e-commerce product.
Another interesting invention is the jute and bamboo flat pack coffin by David How, which is eco-friendly and easy to assemble. Anna Coombe from Suffolk also patented a unique baking method that combines dough and batter to create cookie cakes.
Anna’s inspiration came from a baking mishap with her daughter, eventually leading to the creation of cookie cakes that are now sold online and in department stores.
In addition to these inventions, there were several other unique creations, such as an easy-to-assemble plywood cow, smart goalie gloves, and shoes made from potatoes. The patent applications reflect a wide range of innovative ideas from UK-based inventors.
The data also revealed that 318 companies accounted for half of the UK-based patent applications in 2023, with Jaguar Land Rover and Dyson leading the pack. Notably, one of Dyson’s inventions involved a robot dog capable of vacuuming, a feature not seen in traditional robot vacuums.
