OpenAI is pushing back against Elon Musk’s legal action, alleging that the company is straying from its original altruistic mission. They claim that Tesla’s CEO actually endorsed their plans to establish a for-profit division.
A recent blog post by ChatGPT Manufacturer Executive revealed historical email conversations with Musk, where he suggested merging Tesla and OpenAI to create a profitable venture. The post states, “We jointly decided in 2017 to establish a for-profit entity.”
Musk criticized OpenAI last week for deviating from its core values by prioritizing financial gains over its mission of advancing technology for humanity. A legal action was initiated in response.
OpenAI expressed regret over the situation with Musk, acknowledging his influence and support. They emphasized the importance of his involvement in fulfilling their mission.
The company intends to seek dismissal of Musk’s breach of contract allegations filed in a San Francisco court.
The proposal for a Tesla merger came after mutual agreement between Musk and OpenAI to establish a for-profit entity for funding the development of artificial general intelligence (AGI). AGI refers to AI capable of performing tasks at or above human intelligence levels.
Despite discussions, OpenAI and Musk could not reach a consensus on commercial terms, as the startup believed full control by an individual contradicted its mission.
Musk’s lawsuit highlights his desire for AGI development to benefit humanity, alongside earlier disagreements over funding strategies.
The legal dispute reflects Musk’s ongoing feud with OpenAI, as the organization garners attention for its generative AI efforts with significant backing from Microsoft. Musk has since launched his AI startup, xAI, in response.
