The iconic studio known for creating beloved series such as Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Neverwinter Nights, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, BioWare, has made a heartbreaking announcement on social media. In a statement released Wednesday afternoon, BioWare revealed that after over 30 years of incredible adventures, they are closing their doors to embark on their next chapter of development. The highly anticipated Mass Effect project has been completed, marking the end of an era.
Shortly after the official announcement, Bloomberg reported on the massive restructuring within BioWare’s parent company, Electronic Arts. According to a source familiar with the company’s plans, 400 jobs are being cut across EA, with 50 of those positions being from BioWare. EA executives explained that they are strategically reallocating talent and investments to drive long-term growth for their players.
Founded in Edmonton, Alberta in 1995, BioWare became part of EA in 2007 through an acquisition. Recognized for titles like Mass Effect and Dragon Age, BioWare was praised by EA’s former CEO as one of the most esteemed studios in the industry. Despite EA going private in a multi-billion-dollar deal last year, the focus remains on delivering high-quality online games and developing new intellectual property to drive value for both players and stakeholders.
As EA shifts its focus towards live services and annual sports franchises to maximize profits, the impact on BioWare and its future remains uncertain. The gaming community mourns the loss of this legendary studio while eagerly anticipating what the future holds for BioWare’s talented team.
