Tesla announced on Tuesday that it will be recalling the majority of its Cybertrucks in the U.S. due to defects with the windshield wipers and exterior trim.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that Tesla has issued four recalls for the 2024 Cybertruck.
The recall affects 11,688 2024 Cybertrucks which experienced a failure of the windshield wiper motor controller due to excessive current. If the wipers fail, there is a higher risk of accidents in wet conditions. The recall applies to all trucks manufactured before June 6th.
Tesla will replace the wiper motors found to be failing prematurely. In a separate incident, the company also recalled 11,383 Cybertrucks due to improperly installed trunk trim sail appliques that could become loose and pose a hazard on the road.
This recall represents another setback for the futuristic Cybertruck, set to enter production next year. Tesla has not disclosed the number of deliveries to customers in its quarterly report.
Tesla’s investigation began in December after issues were discovered with undelivered Cybertrucks. Subsequent problems in customer vehicles led to the recall due to trim applique issues.
Tesla’s service teams will address the problems by applying adhesion promoter and pressure-sensitive tape or replacing missing trim at no cost to affected vehicles.
In April, Tesla recalled about 4,000 Cybertrucks to fix a problem with the accelerator pedal pad. Despite delays and production challenges, Tesla plans to start delivering its Blade Runner-inspired truck in November 2023.
