U.S. auto safety regulators announced on Friday that their investigation into Tesla’s Autopilot system revealed at least 13 fatal crashes involving the feature. The investigation also uncovered discrepancies between the claims made by electric car manufacturers and the actual reality.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found 13 Tesla crashes resulting in at least one fatality and numerous serious injuries over a three-year Autopilot safety investigation initiated in August 2021. It was determined that “foreseeable misuse of the system by the driver clearly played a role.”
It was also found that “Tesla’s inadequate driver engagement system was not sufficient for Autopilot’s permissive operating capabilities, resulting in a significant safety gap.”
NHTSA expressed concerns that the name “Autopilot” used by Tesla “could mislead drivers into believing that the automation has greater capabilities than it actually does, leading to undue trust in the system.”
