Losing weight and maintaining it can be a challenging task. Recent studies suggest that obesity can create a lasting impact on the immune cells found in fat tissue, making weight loss more difficult.
A study conducted on mice revealed that obesity triggers changes in immune cells known as macrophages, disrupting the normal functions of fat tissue. These changes persisted even after the mice were switched to a low-fat diet, hindering their weight loss efforts.
This phenomenon of cellular “obesity memory” may provide insights into the body’s resistance to fat loss.
Expert Dr. Amelie Bonnefont, specializing in obesity genetics, found the results of the mouse study to be groundbreaking in understanding how cells retain memories of obesity.
Macrophages in fat tissue have vital roles in removing dead cells and aiding in fat breakdown. However, in obese individuals, macrophages exhibit problems with alternative splicing, a key process for normal cellular function.
Further research on humans showed similar issues with macrophages in obese individuals, shedding light on potential mechanisms that make weight loss challenging.
While targeting defective macrophages as a weight loss strategy seems promising, Professor Ferdinand von Mayen highlighted the need for more research before translating these findings into human treatments.
