Tesla Unveils Roadster 2 with Gravity-Defying Demo
Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, wowed the audience with a spectacular showcase of the Roadster 2, which made its appearance after nine years of anticipation. The Roadster 2 took a “big leap forward” in innovation as it soared through the air, showcasing its incredible capabilities in a memorable moment that could even make Buzz Lightyear proud.
At the launch event held at SpaceX’s Rocket Development and Test Facility in McGregor, Texas, the two-seater Roadster 2 stole the show by accelerating from 0 to 60 miles per hour in less than a second. The car then defied gravity by flipping upside down from a high ramp, before gracefully landing on the ground with the help of its onboard thrusters.
While this performance was undoubtedly thrilling, the buzz around Tesla’s new luxury electric vehicle (EV) did not translate to a rise in Tesla stock immediately after the event. However, the mesmerizing display captured the attention of social media platforms around the world, generating plenty of viral clips and discussions.
Tesla’s Head of Vehicle Engineering, Lars Moravy, explained the intricacies of the Roadster 2 in a pre-event interview with Hagerty, shedding light on how the innovative EV prototype managed to pull off such astonishing feats.
Franz von Holzhausen, Tesla’s chief designer, crafted the sleek exterior of the Roadster 2, ensuring a visually striking appearance that matched its cutting-edge technology. Safety was a top priority during the gravity-defying demonstration, with blacked-out windows concealing the interior of the EV, which was devoid of a human driver.
Powertrain and Performance
The Roadster 2 boasts an impressive rear-wheel-drive configuration, a departure from Tesla’s usual all-wheel-drive setups. With two motors producing over 1 megawatt of power (equivalent to 1,341 horsepower) and more than 1,400 newton meters (Nm) of torque, the car surpasses the Plaid in terms of sheer power and torque delivery, despite having fewer motors.
Despite its increased size, Moravy revealed that the Roadster 2 weighs just under 1,700 kilograms, which is comparable to the original Roadster’s weight of 1,300 kilograms. This remarkable feat showcases Tesla’s commitment to engineering lightweight yet powerful electric vehicles.
