UNEP Report: 1.5°C Temperature Goal Unattainable
In 2015, almost all countries agreed to limit global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. However, recent developments have shown that this goal may no longer be achievable. The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) has now shifted its focus to minimizing the extent and duration of exceeding this limit.
One of the key factors contributing to this problem is the continuous increase in carbon emissions, with one of the largest emitters, the United States, wavering on its commitment to the agreement. Immediate and drastic emissions reductions are necessary, along with the removal of massive amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere by the end of the century.
Facing Reality
Various temperature records indicate that the Earth is either very close to or has already surpassed the 1.5 degree limit. Despite the ongoing El Niño event, it is almost certain that this milestone has been exceeded.
