Apple’s AirPods 5 bring active noise cancellation (ANC) to both models, including the $129 version, while adding Siri features, speech recognition, live translation, and spatial audio. Their semi-open design delivers surprisingly effective noise reduction and natural transparency mode, though the fit is less secure and less isolating than the silicone-tipped AirPods Pro 3.
The biggest upgrade is that both AirPods 5 models include ANC. Buyers no longer have to pay extra for noise cancellation, and even the $129 model is a better deal than the standard AirPods 4 were at launch. Both versions also support Apple’s Siri features, speech recognition, live translation, and spatial audio.
AirPods 5 also offer excellent ANC for semi-open earphones. Apple says a redesigned multiport acoustic architecture and improved audio processing filter out up to 50 percent more external noise than the AirPods 4 with ANC. I can’t confirm that percentage, but the improvement was noticeable during testing.
On domestic flights in particular, the AirPods 5 did an impressive job of dampening airplane-engine noise. The cabin does not disappear completely, and the AirPods Pro 3 still provide stronger sound isolation, but the improvement over the AirPods 4 with ANC was significant.
Transparency mode sounds even more natural. I found it especially useful with adaptive audio, which automatically adjusts the balance between ANC and transparency mode according to the surroundings. For example, while running, the sound of footsteps approaching from behind prompted the earphones to lower the music and let more ambient sound through. The transitions were smooth enough that most outside noises blended into the songs. I could stay aware of my surroundings without being distracted by every small sound around me.
For people who run outdoors or commute to work, the AirPods 5 may be more appealing than the AirPods Pro 3’s more sealed design. You give up some isolation, but you remain more naturally aware of what is happening around you.

Those improvements cannot overcome the fact that I generally prefer the AirPods Pro 3’s silicone tips to the AirPods 5’s semi-open fit. The AirPods Pro 3 create a snug seal without feeling stuffy, and their interchangeable tips allow users to adjust the fit. That seal also makes a noticeable difference during workouts.
During long runs, the AirPods 5 can begin to slip as sweat builds up. The AirPods Pro 3 remained secure. A more stable fit also naturally improves noise cancellation.
