Willis Gibson, a 13-year-old, made history in the game when he became the first person to win the Nintendo game Tetris on December 21. According to a 2020 study, approximately 40 percent of teenage boys and 20 percent of teenage girls in the United States play video games every day, with about half of those who play daily reporting that they play more than three hours per day.
There are physical and mental health concerns about spending so much time on screen, but research also suggests that gaming can have potential benefits. Video games often involve quick problem solving and careful attention, meaning that young gamers have performed better than non-gamers on a number of memory and attention tests.
Other research has shown that playing video games in groups can improve young people’s communication skills and ability to adapt to new situations. While gaming is not always a healthy choice for everyone, some experts believe that moderate virtual gameplay can help people develop real-world skills.
