Prepare for More Extreme Weather Events in Wales Due to Climate Change
Climate change is expected to bring more frequent and intense extreme weather events to Wales, leading to wetter and harsher winters. Scientists are closely monitoring what they describe as the “strongest El Niño in living memory” over the Pacific Ocean.
The occurrence of such strong natural weather events can raise global temperatures and heighten the risk of extreme weather events.
Jeremy Parr from NRW emphasized that while this doesn’t guarantee bad weather in the UK, it is a concerning piece of the puzzle for the upcoming months. He stressed the importance of proactive measures like investing in flood protection, acknowledging that not every flood can be prevented.
With the possibility of increasing floods, NRW urges residents to stay prepared by checking their postcode online to assess flood risk, signing up for flood alerts, and accessing advice on what to do if flooding is expected in their area.
Despite NRW’s flood warning service being available to 181,158 properties in Wales, only 27% are currently registered to receive alerts, with myths about potential premium increases holding people back from enrolling.
