Quantum computing startups are developing their own operating systems to run quantum machines, similar to Microsoft Windows or macOS on standard computers.
Quantum computer hardware is rapidly advancing. Five years ago, few machines contained more than 20 quantum bits (qubits), the building blocks of quantum computers, but now devices with more than 100 qubits are becoming increasingly common. But to actually perform calculations, those qubits require quantum software.
