The first experiment to transmit electricity from space to Earth could lead to space-based solar power plants within a decade, according to one of the researchers involved.
Such stations would benefit from increased sun exposure due to the lack of clouds and atmosphere, as well as the avoidance of nighttime darkness. However, the difficulty of designing and manufacturing structures large enough for practical use yet light enough to be launched by rocket makes such facilities impractical.
