Radio telescopes observing the universe face increasing challenges from electromagnetic interference from thousands of satellites in low Earth orbit, and now experiments with SpaceX’s Starlink satellites have shown a way to virtually eliminate one form of the problem.
As these kinds of satellites orbit the Earth, they send so-called downlink signals to Earth to provide Internet and communication services. When they pass through the area of the sky observed by radio telescopes, the strong signals can cause temporary buzzing that can last for hours…
