A review of the scientific evidence found that while there are many different reasons why sharks and rays leap or jump out of the water, including courtship, childbirth and hygiene, the behaviour is more common than previously thought.
Breaching is a common sight among great white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias), Mako Shark (Izulus oxyrhynx) and salmon shark (Ramna ditropis), the filter-feeding basking shark (Setohinus Maximus) as well as many types of rays, including manta rays, hawk rays, and manta rays.
