There was a peculiar event on March 3, 1876, in Bath County, Kentucky, where a chunk of meat supposedly fell from the sky. This incident was famously known as the “Kentucky Meat Shower.” After testing, scientists concluded that two local men believed the meat to be either mutton or venison.
It is hypothesized that the meat was regurgitated by a turkey vulture while in flight. These birds consume carcasses, and they often spit out partially digested meat to ward off predators and lighten their load. The powerful stomach acid of the vultures can deter predators and even incinerate them. When one vulture starts vomiting, others in the flock might follow suit.
This article addresses the question (from Jennifer Lewis of Reading), “What causes Kentucky Meat Showers?”
