The Impact of El Niño on Global Weather Patterns
El Niño, a natural warming of the tropical Pacific Ocean, has far-reaching effects on weather patterns worldwide.
During El Niño events, changes in wind patterns over the Atlantic Ocean result in increased wind shear, disrupting the formation of tropical storms and hurricanes.
Conversely, El Niño events tend to boost activity in the Pacific Ocean through warmer sea surface temperatures and more favorable wind conditions, providing the perfect environment for storm development.
Recent temperature records in the east-central Pacific have been shattered, with sea surface temperatures surpassing those recorded during the intense El Niño event of 2015.
This season has already seen 17 named storms, including nine hurricanes—seven of which were classified as major hurricanes.
In terms of accumulated cyclonic energy, this season is 2.5 times more active than usual at this stage.
Forecasters predict that the El Niño phenomenon will continue to strengthen, potentially reaching its peak in November or December.
