Fourth Measles-Related Death Confirmed in Pennsylvania

The Pennsylvania Department of Health has reported that a fourth person has died from measles, with the most recent victim being an unvaccinated 18-year-old male from Mifflin County. This tragic news comes following the recent death of a 40-year-old woman in Jefferson County and two infants in Lancaster County who were too young to be vaccinated.

Mifflin County Coroner Andrea L. Alcalde confirmed that the 18-year-old’s cause of death was Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis (ADEM), a serious complication of measles. ADEM is a rapidly progressing autoimmune disease that causes inflammation in the brain and spinal cord, often associated with measles and other viral infections.

Secretary of Health Debra Bogen expressed condolences to the families affected by the recent deaths and emphasized the importance of vaccination to prevent further outbreaks. There have been 693 reported measles cases in 38 counties this year, with 99 new cases reported in the past week and 133 hospitalizations.

It is crucial for the public to be informed about measles and have access to the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine. Vaccines have played a vital role in preventing measles outbreaks for decades, and efforts must continue to stop the spread of this highly contagious virus.
