Chimpanzees are well-known for their ability to use tools in the wild as a way to forage for food. A recent study published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology reveals that adult chimpanzees pass on this learned behavior to their offspring through social learning. They actively demonstrate actions and provide tools to younger chimpanzees, enabling them to imitate the same actions.
“The transfer of food or tools from an experienced individual, known as food or tool transfer, plays a significant role in helping chimpanzees understand how to utilize tools for acquiring hard-to-reach food,” explained co-author Andreu Sánchez-Meguias, a graduate student at the University of Barcelona and the Jane Goodall Institute Spain in Senegal. “This method of tool transfer, combined with observation and guided practice, functions as a form of education with the mother often serving as the primary model and teacher for young chimpanzees.”
Historically, the use of tools by chimpanzees has fascinated scientists. As far back as 1871, Charles Darwin observed chimpanzees cracking nuts with stones. Initially thought to be a unique trait of humans, tool use in chimpanzees gained widespread attention when Jane Goodall witnessed a chimpanzee named David Greybeard fashioning tools to gather termites for consumption. This discovery prompted renowned primatologist Louis Leakey to contemplate redefining the concepts of ‘tool’ and ‘human’ or accepting chimpanzees as part of the human lineage.
Chimpanzees have since been observed creating tools for various purposes, such as making sponges from leaves to absorb liquids, fashioning sticks for collecting algae, and crafting rudimentary spears for hunting. While tool use is not exclusive to chimpanzees, it is more commonly observed among monkeys and apes. Other species like dolphins have shown behaviors that some scientists interpret as tool use, particularly when engaging with other members of their species. These actions may serve purposes such as communication, social bonding, and aggression. (Interestingly, octopuses also exhibit similar throwing behaviors.)
