The United States, Russia, China, and India are all developing various types of space weapons, including anti-satellite and anti-space capabilities. Over the past decade, Russia and China have engaged in more frequent space operations, known as rendezvous and close operations (RPOs), which can potentially threaten Western satellites. Dr. Rod Thornton, an expert in Russian defense and security, warns that these maneuvers could enable satellites to become hunter-killer satellites, posing a significant risk to existing space infrastructure.
Notably, China has demonstrated the ability to manipulate satellites in orbit, suggesting a potential use for debris removal. However, experts caution that certain space weapons, like direct-ascent anti-satellite missiles, can generate substantial space debris, increasing the risk of collisions and damage to operational satellites. Dr. Mark Hilborn emphasizes the long-lasting dangers posed by debris from past missile tests, highlighting the ongoing threat to space assets.
In light of these developments, the international community must address the growing concerns surrounding space weaponization and debris mitigation to ensure the sustainability and security of outer space activities.
