Witness the awe-inspiring total solar eclipse that graced the skies of Europe on August 12, 2026.
The eclipse’s trajectory took it through northern Spain and over Greenland, casting a shadow of darkness that lasted over two minutes. The rest of Western Europe experienced the moon blocking approximately 90 percent of the sun’s disk, resulting in a darkened sky. This astronomical event was also visible in Canada and the northeastern United States.
Solar eclipses are rare occurrences, happening multiple times each year but seldom in a specific location. The last time the Path of Wholeness crossed all of Europe was in 1999. Luckily, Europe won’t have to wait as long for the next spectacle. On August 2, 2027, another solar eclipse is set to pass along the northern coast of Africa and graze the southern tip of Spain. Following this, on January 26, 2028, an annular solar eclipse will occur, featuring a thin ring of light around the moon, passing over Spain once more.
