ReactOS: Open Source Windows Alternative Reaches Major Milestone
The open-source Windows alternative ReactOS has achieved a major milestone: the ability to install operating systems directly on your computer’s NT file system drive partition. This development, as reported by Phoronics, clears a significant hurdle for the project and brings it closer to reaching the beta stage.
Previously, ReactOS required users to maintain a FAT32 partition for installation. The adoption of NTFS, a proprietary file system developed by Microsoft and rooted in the Windows NT family since 1993, marks a substantial advancement for the project. The transition to NTFS, a standard used by most Windows systems today, enhances ReactOS’ binary compatibility, especially with Windows XP and later versions such as Windows Server 2003.
Despite this progress, ReactOS notes that the new NTFS driver is not without limitations. It currently lacks caching, journaling, and security support, which may result in performance degradation. The ReactOS team emphasized the presence of potentially undiscovered bugs, urging caution for users considering transitioning to the new driver.
For those seeking a Windows alternative, ReactOS’ development towards NTFS compatibility represents a significant step forward in creating a viable open-source operating system solution.
