Traditionally, a defibrillator pad is placed on the upper right side of the chest and another on the lower left side in anterolateral placement. However, a new study suggests that anterior-posterior pad placement may be more effective in improving survival rates.
An observational study by scientists at Oregon Health & Science University, published in JAMA Network Open, found that patients with anterior-posterior pad placement were 2.64 times more likely to achieve return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) compared to anterolateral pad placement.
Although this new placement method shows promise, it still requires further research. Currently, the recommended practice is to stick to anterolateral pad placement for defibrillation.
This article addresses the question “What is the most effective way to use a defibrillator?” posed by Angus Wright via email.
