However, the athleticist is now requesting transparency regarding the impacts of new systems on privacy before deployment.

“Kyle may not be in charge of the department for science, innovation, and technology, but the future government may easily utilize optional digital wallets as a fundamental ID scheme launch pad.”

Kyle unveiled this technology this week with a presentation inspired by Silicon Valley launches. He mentioned that the app will be launched in June, and the wallet will continue to “securely store government-issued digital documents.” The hope is that this app will integrate with various government services, from paying vehicle tax to managing welfare benefits and interacting with NHS.

Authorities are using apps and wallets that are highly secure on modern smartphones, incorporating facial recognition checks similar to those used for digital bank card payments. There is no central database of documents stored in the wallet, requiring hackers to access individual mobile phones.

A government spokesperson explains: “By using the same technology as securing a digital bank card, even if the mobile phone is stolen, access by the thief is not possible, making the digital driver’s license much more secure than a physical copy.

“It is evident that digital identity is not only advantageous but also opens up new possibilities, such as maintaining call centers and in-person support for those requiring assistance with digital services.”

The credentials stored in the wallet should be more challenging to forge than paper documents. Additionally, consolidating numerous essential documents in one place eliminates the risk of losing or damaging physical copies with digital updates and streamlined paperless applications.

It also enhances privacy in certain scenarios, for example, citizens no longer need to reveal their names and addresses when purchasing age-restricted items like alcohol or fireworks.

If this system is outdated or misused, the government reserves the right to revoke qualifications as needed. However, if this is done unjustly, citizens can still utilize paper copies.

Failure of UK government to include AI usage on mandatory register | AI

The use of AI within Whitehall ranges from Microsoft’s Copilot system to automated fraud and error checking in benefits systems. The lack of transparency in the government’s use of algorithms has raised concerns among privacy rights campaigners and experts in the field.

Since the end of 2022, only three algorithms have been recorded in the national registry. These include systems used by the Cabinet Office and AI-powered cameras analyzing pedestrian crossings in Cambridge. A system that analyzes patient reviews of NHS services is also included. Despite the slow progress in registering AI systems, public agencies have signed 164 contracts referencing AI since February. Technology companies like Microsoft and Meta are actively promoting their AI systems to government agencies.

The Department for Work and Pensions and the Home Office are already leveraging AI for various purposes, from fraud detection to decision-making processes. Police forces are using AI-powered facial recognition software to track criminal suspects, while NHS England has signed a deal with Palantir to build a new data platform. Technology that becomes mandatory across Europe from this weekend could change that culture, because from July 7 all new cars sold in the EU and Northern Ireland must come standard with a suite of technological safety features, most notable of which is intelligent speed assistance, colloquially known as a speed limiter.

While the rest of the UK can theoretically enjoy the fullest range of post-Brexit freedoms, as ministers used to be fond of saying, the integrated nature of car manufacturing means that new cars here will also tell drivers to take their foot off the accelerator, combining satellite-navigation maps with a forward-facing camera that reads road signs and automatically sounds an alarm if you're going too fast in the zone you're in.

Drivers of newer cars will be accustomed to similar features already installed, but for now they can be easily disabled. As a representative for one major manufacturer said, “You have to balance whether it makes the car safer, but it's upsetting people. We've found that a lot of people actually have everything turned off.”

But as cars of the future are designed with systems that can never be turned off, restarting the engine every time it shuts off, will car enthusiasts see this as genuine progress?

“This is one of those things that's very hard to argue against,” says Steve Fowler, an automotive consultant and former editor of Autocar. “Observing the speed limit will not only save you in countless ways, it could potentially save your life.”

“Balancing safety, performance and integration, and building a system that works with the driver, is a real challenge for manufacturers,” Al Ani says.

But most agree that the benefits far outweigh the risks. More and more drivers are willing to go slower and rely more on technology, Fowler said. “I think driving is changing, and drivers are changing, and I hate to say it, but they don't necessarily like the stuff that enthusiasts of the past liked, the engineering that's been put into it.”

“People are more aware that speeding increases fuel consumption. If you're going 80 miles per hour on the highway, your fuel consumption increases exponentially.”

With the rising cost of living putting as much emphasis on miles per gallon as speed, Fowler says that driving well may be more enjoyable than going fast. “We need to develop a new generation of drivers who realize that more relaxed driving can be just as rewarding. If you drive well without losing momentum, you won't have to stop and start as often, which saves fuel, saves money and saves on emissions. Maybe mpg will become the new mph.”
