Dozens of US Beaches to Close by July 4th Due to Fecal Bacteria Contamination

Right before the extended Independence Day weekend, numerous beaches nationwide were closed due to high levels of harmful bacteria, accompanied by health advisories. The issue stems from fecal waste, a prevalent summer concern in both freshwater and ocean areas, which can lead to gastrointestinal illnesses and skin infections.

At least six states have enacted beach or lake closures and advisories. Testing revealed unsafe levels of fecal bacteria in various waterways. In Massachusetts, nearly 20 beaches are closed due to elevated bacterial counts. In New York, four beaches have been shut down. Illinois has issued at least eight advisories over recent weeks. Los Angeles County announced 8 ocean water quality advisories as of Tuesday. Three beaches in Michigan have been closed.

The bacteria posing threats to summer swimmers include E. coli and enterococcus. Contamination may result from sewage, fertilizers, or stormwater runoff. E. coli is often found in freshwater environments, while enterococcus can develop in both oceans and freshwater.

Edward Dudley, the director of Penn State’s E. coli reference center, noted that testing for swimming waters is a standard practice, as are the subsequent closures.

Antalpreet Jutla, an associate professor of environmental engineering science at the University of Florida, mentioned that beach closures tend to occur during the summer months when surface temperatures rise and bacteria can proliferate more easily. However, he emphasized that various factors — including human activities, temperature, and water movement — can influence bacterial growth.

Jutla also reiterated that closures due to fecal bacteria are quite common.

In North Carolina, authorities cautioned about a cyanobacteria algae bloom in Lake Norman, advising people to keep children and pets away from water that appears bright green, blue, or scummy. Unlike fecal bacteria, cyanobacteria are one of the primary causes of algae in freshwater environments, as noted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Research indicates that climate change may cause more frequent cyanobacteria blooms.

The Environmental Protection Agency has established guidelines for safe levels of fecal bacteria and recommends water quality and monitoring standards. Some Illinois beaches undergo testing every two weeks.

“Generally, the higher the level, the greater the risk,” Dudley stated.

Fecal waste can result in numerous harmful diseases, but experts are increasingly concerned about the recent rise in another dangerous bacterium, Vibrio.

Vibrio is a potentially lethal bacterium responsible for similar beach closures in the recent past. These carnivorous bacteria flourish in warm coastal waters. Jutla noted that he has observed Vibrio gradually migrating northward across the US. Testing for this bacterium varies based on specific conditions and concentration thresholds.

“While trends nationwide seem unusual at the moment, it’s something we’re particularly worried about: its presence in coastal waters,” Jutla remarked regarding Vibrio.

The deadly V. vulnificus is a rare type of bacterium, yet infections have surged in recent years due to warmer seawater along the US East Coast.

Tesla Observes Decrease in Car Delivery and Unfortunate 4th Quarter Revenue

After the US stock market closed, Tesla released its fourth-quarter 2024 revenue on Wednesday, showing a decrease in sales for the year but a strong stock price performance.

The automotive company reported earnings of $0.73 per share and a profit of $257 billion, lower than Wall Street analysts’ predictions of $27.222 billion. Profit also declined compared to the previous year.

Tesla’s stock dropped by around 4% after the news.

During the revenue call on Wednesday, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced the Tesla Saber Cub, an autonomous driving taxi set to be produced in 2026. The company also mentioned a delay in release and the launch of the Robotaxi business, with plans for an advanced version of the Model Y sedan to be released in March. Tesla is currently under federal investigation for the use of complete autonomous driving functions in the US.

“This is not a fantasy,” Musk stated. “2025 will be a crucial year for Tesla.”

Recently, Tesla became the world’s top electric manufacturer in the last quarter of 2023, regaining its top spot in the first three quarters of 2024. This success was attributed to a sudden price reduction.

In the revenue report, Tesla disclosed 495,570 deliveries in the fourth quarter and 1.8 million for the year, marking its first year-over-year decline after missing delivery targets in 2024.

The reduction of European subsidies for electric vehicles has impacted Tesla, leading to a 24% drop in Tesla vehicle sales. Some Wall Street analysts predict that lower interest rates set by the US Federal Reserve could boost Tesla demand.

Last year, Tesla’s disappointing delivery numbers highlighted delays in new model releases and a lack of demand for older models, like the cyber truck priced at $80,000.

Facing legal battles over his compensation, Musk had threatened to leave the company but ultimately remained. Tesla’s stock price has soared over the past year and has gained 75% in the last six months, buoyed by Musk’s relationship with US regulators and favorable business environment.

Despite threats of tariffs on various products from China, including cars, Tesla remains optimistic about future growth.

Deepseek Mania: Meta to Report Strong 4th Quarter Revenue

Meta finally reported its fourth-quarter earnings more than 30 minutes after the market closed on Wednesday, exceeding Wall Street’s predictions. The company posted revenue of $483 billion and profit per share of $6.75, topping analysts’ expectations of $46.9 billion and $6.75 per share.

Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s founder and CEO, expressed his excitement for expanding initiatives in 2025.

The day before, Meta’s stock surged nearly 40% after an internal memo revealed record sales and earnings.

Zuckerberg told analysts, “This will be a significant year, and our long-term initiatives will become clearer by the end of the year.”

A report in the Wall Street Journal revealed that Donald Trump signed an agreement for Meta to pay $25 million to settle a lawsuit filed in 2021 after banning him following the January 6 attack.

Meta did not provide revenue guidance for 2025 but expects first-quarter revenue to be between $39.5 billion and $41.8 billion.

In a Press Release, Meta announced increased investment in AI infrastructure for 2025 and analysts expressed concern over revenue projections.

Meta also announced plans to develop personalized AI assistants, highlighting Meta AI as the most used virtual assistant.

Analysts remain optimistic about Meta AI despite competitors like DeepSeek gaining traction in China.

Analysts compared DeepSeek with Meta’s AI models and Microsoft’s earnings were reported on the same day as Meta.

Concerns were raised regarding Meta’s decision to remove third-party fact-checking programs, with analysts emphasizing the importance of brand safety and user trust.

Despite criticism, Zuckerberg defended the changes, stating that community notes would enhance information accuracy on the platform.

Meta’s CFO Susan Lee affirmed strong advertiser demand despite content policy changes and the announcement of layoffs.

As Meta faces challenges and changes, analysts predict a momentum shift in the company’s performance in 2025.

Zuckerberg hinted at potential growth opportunities on Instagram and Facebook as Meta explores new possibilities amid industry shifts.

A leadership shake-up in Reality Labs was reported, with Meta reevaluating its focus on core business areas under new leadership.

Locating the Quadriids Meteor Shower for January 3rd and 4th, 2024

The first major meteor shower of the year will begin tonight and tomorrow, peaking in the early morning hours of January 4th, Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). This meteor shower, known as the “Subungid meteor shower,'' is one of the most active meteor showers of the year.

At its peak, up to 110 meteors can be observed per hour, and the phenomenon is often associated with particularly bright meteors called bolides.

This year's waxing moon means you might be able to see as many as 110 meteors due to the moonlight getting in the way, but if the skies are clear, it's still worth seeing.

When is the Quadrant Meteor Shower?

The current Shibungid meteor shower began on December 28th, but was visible to some people on January 3rd and peaked just before 1 a.m. Japan time on January 4th, making this phenomenon a small phenomenon. It is expected to last 6 hours.

Where can I observe the Squirrel meteor shower?

The Quadriids meteor shower is best viewed from the Northern Hemisphere. If the sky is clear, try to go outside after midnight to avoid light pollution.

From the Southern Hemisphere, you are less likely to see the Quadriids meteor shower. Because its peak occurs after sunrise. But lucky viewers might be able to spot some photos in the hours before sunrise on January 4th.

How to observe the Shibungid meteor shower

You don't need any special equipment to view the meteor shower. Be sure to pack something to keep yourself warm, lie down, look at the sky, and wait for the meteors to appear.

Like all meteor showers, the Cybungid meteor shower is named after the constellation from which the meteors appear to come from the sky. In this case, it is an old constellation called “Quadrans Muralis” in his 1800s, when the shower was discovered. Now, this part of the sky is part of the constellation Boes.

You don't need to be able to find the constellation Boes to see the meteor shower, but if you want to know where it is, you can find it at its brightest star called Arcturus. First, find the Plow or Big Dipper and look at the row of stars that form its handle.

Continuing along the arc of this curve, you will reach a bright star visible near the eastern horizon around midnight. Remember this technique by thinking of “Ark to Arcturus”.

What is a meteor shower?

Meteors are flashes of light that move quickly across the night sky, sometimes with a trail behind them. They are produced when pieces of dust and debris enter the Earth's atmosphere and burn up.

Although this happens all the time, meteor showers are the peak in the number of visible meteors. They occur when Earth's orbit brings it into large chunks of debris left behind by comets and asteroids. In particular, the origin of the quadrant basin is 2003 Asteroid called EH1.
