Severe Heat Impacts Children’s Early Learning

Extreme heat and poverty can hinder child development

Research indicates that young children exposed to extreme heat typically exhibit a reduced vocabulary, with fewer words, letters, and numbers understood, suggesting that global warming could negatively affect early human development.

Specifically, when average monthly maximum temperatures reached 32°C (90°F) or higher, children aged 3 and 4 were 2.8 to 12.2 percent less likely to meet developmental benchmarks compared to those in environments with maximum temperatures below 26°C (79°F).

“This marks the first instance in literature demonstrating that excessive heat influences not just physical health but also developmental capabilities,” stated Jorge Quartas from New York University.

Quartas and his team analyzed data from 19,600 children surveyed by UNICEF across Georgia, Gambia, Madagascar, Malawi, Sierra Leone, and the State of Palestine, referencing the early childhood development index. They assessed children’s abilities in naming letters, reading simple words, and recognizing numbers from 1 to 10.

The researchers correlated this data with climate records while adjusting for variables such as poverty, maternal education, and baseline temperatures. Notably, even temperatures of 30°C (86°F) began to adversely affect literacy and numeracy skills, with heat also impeding children’s social, emotional, and physical development to a lesser degree.

“Minor effects in early childhood can become more pronounced over time,” Quartas explains. For instance, children who struggle with number recognition might find it challenging to learn math concepts, potentially falling behind academically.

Heat-related stress remains the primary cause of weather-related fatalities, claiming nearly 500,000 lives annually. A recent rapid assessment estimated that the heatwave in June and July was responsible for 2,300 deaths across 12 European cities, primarily occurring among those aged 65 and older.

The findings also revealed that the impacts of heat extend even to prenatal periods. For instance, temperatures of 33 degrees Celsius (91 degrees Fahrenheit) during early pregnancy correlated with a 5.6% reduction in the likelihood of successful childhood development.

Children from poorer, urban households with limited access to water resources were found to be more heavily affected by the heat. “Climate change and excessive heat serve as amplifiers of existing threats,” Quartas articulated. “These children are already at a disadvantage.”

Nonetheless, the study may not comprehensively address barriers such as violence and political instability, which can also impede childhood development, as noted by Giulia Pescarini from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Further investigations are needed to clarify how heat impacts development, she suggests, noting that low-income households might lack air conditioning, and parents may experience increased stress during heat events.

Pescarini emphasizes that a better understanding of who is affected and how can aid in developing adaptive strategies to support these vulnerable groups.

How Playing Instruments Aids Children’s Reading Skills

Learning to play an instrument encompasses both cognitive and creative pursuits

Engaging in music training seems to enhance reading comprehension among young children by boosting their ability to discern and manipulate the sounds that constitute words.

Research has long suggested a connection between learning to play musical instruments and improved early reading skills, as shown in studies like Improved early reading ability and Mathematics. However, the mechanics behind this connection were previously unclear, as mastering an instrument requires a plethora of skills.

“Beyond reading musical notes—which necessitates learning a new form of written language—you must also perceive the sounds and adjust your physical movements accordingly,” highlighted Maria Garcia de Soria from the University of Aberdeen, UK. This process indicates that music education can enrich our cognitive abilities, enhance memory, and improve sound perception.

To further investigate the relationship between music training and reading abilities, Garcia de Soria and her team assessed 57 children aged 5 to 9. Approximately half of these children had engaged in instrumental study for at least one month with a practice schedule of a minimum of 30 minutes per week, while the others participated in non-musical extracurricular activities.

The researchers discovered that the children involved in music lessons outperformed their peers on phonological awareness tests. This skill relates directly to the capacity to recognize and manipulate the individual sounds—or phonemes—that constitute words, such as the three phonemes found in “dog.” Additionally, they demonstrated enhanced reading proficiency.

The research team accounted for various factors that could influence literacy levels, including socioeconomic status and overall cognitive capability.

In a separate component of the study, researchers utilized EEG to monitor and analyze the brain activity of the children while they were exposed to the Gingerbread Man fairy tale.

They observed that heightened neural activity in the language-related regions of the left hemisphere of the brain correlated with better reading performance across all participants. Notably, the music group recorded higher reading scores despite lower levels of this neural activity, suggesting a more developed capacity for adult-like language processing.

“Adults typically engage music and speech processing across both hemispheres, occasionally favoring the right side. It appears that children receiving music training develop more adult-like capabilities in this area,” noted Garcia de Soria.

This finding connects to the way individuals adapt their reading strategies as they mature, moving from sounding out phonemes to recognizing words and their meanings without mental rehearsal, explained team member Anastasia Klimovich-Gray at the University of Aberdeen.

Phonological recognition is a crucial precursor to learning how to read, which supports the idea that music education can enhance literacy by fostering increased sensitivity to phonological structures, according to Klimovich-Gray. However, it’s not necessarily a one-sided relationship; Garcia de Soria added, “Music fosters reading skills, but reading may also bolster future music performance.”

Demonstrating that these skills can mutually enhance one another may assist children who struggle with reading, Klimovich-Gray explained. “For those facing phonological challenges early on, potentially before a dyslexia diagnosis, music training could provide supplementary support alongside phonics instruction.”

“The revelation that music training refines the phonological encoding processes in the left hemisphere aligns with broader academic findings,” stated Alice Mado Proverbio at the University of Bicocca in Milan, Italy. Furthermore, music education may also cultivate specialization in the right hemisphere of the brain, which promotes faster reading development, she concluded.

Kido Nursery Hackers Threaten to Release Additional Children’s Profiles | Cybercrime Update

A hacker threatens to release personal information and photographs of thousands of nursery children online unless a ransom is paid.

Identified by the alias Shine, the hacker compromised the UK-based Kido Nursery chain and revealed the profiles of 10 children online on Thursday. Their Dark Web site features a “Data Leak Roadmap,” indicating plans to “publish 30 profiles of personal data for each child and 100 employees.”

A cybersecurity briefing reviewed by the Guardian suggests that Radiant is a new entity within the cybercrime landscape, “pushing the limits of morality and practicality.”

The group’s online content demonstrates proficient English skills; however, there are hints they may not be Western, attributed to a “slight awkwardness” in their phrasing, the analysis indicates.

The Radiant Gang’s “leak sites”—a common strategy in ransomware attacks displaying victim data on the dark web—contain 10 Kido customer profiles for parents, which include the child’s name, date of birth, parent’s and grandparent’s names, as well as address and phone number.

The site claims to possess sensitive information on over 8,000 children and their families, documenting incidents, protection reports, and claims. All Kido nurseries in the UK have reported being impacted.

The leak site mentioned its efforts to negotiate with Kido, stating, “It’s slowly leaking, which undermines the entire company and prompts them to continue the dialogue.”

A spokesperson from Kido stated: “We have recently identified and responded to cyber incidents. We are collaborating with external experts to investigate and determine the details of what occurred. We will promptly inform both our families and relevant authorities and maintain close communication with them.”

The nursery chain is collaborating with authorities, including the intelligence committee’s office, Ofsted, and the Metropolitan Police, which is currently conducting an investigation.

An email from Kido UK CEO Catherine Stoneman, reviewed by the Guardian, noted a “complex” forensic investigation and emphasized treating the incident as a “first priority.” She suggested that the breach involved “two third-party systems responsible for processing certain data.”

Stoneman elaborated: “If we confirm that family information has been compromised, affected families have been contacted. If you have not received direct communication, that means there is no forensic evidence indicating your data has been impacted.”

With 18 locations across London, the US, India, and China, Kido informed parents that the breach occurred due to criminal access to data hosted on a software service known as Famly.

Famly’s CEO, Anders Laustsen, stated: “We will conduct a comprehensive investigation into this matter to ensure that Famly’s security and infrastructure have not been compromised.

One parent shared with the BBC that she received a threatening phone call from a hacker.

Sean, whose child attends Kido Nursery in Tooting, southwest London, expressed that neither he nor any parents he knew had been directly informed by the nursery about the potential compromise of their children’s data. “How could they obtain details for specific kids, not just generally? That’s the real issue,” he remarked.

Sean noted that he viewed the risk of real-time information regarding children—such as through cyberattacks—as a necessary trade-off for using the app. He empathized with nursery staff who bear the brunt of parental complaints, pointing out that the app provider should be held accountable.

“One of the obviously alarming aspects is that anyone could stoop to such depths to extort money from a nursery while using children as leverage,” he said.

Authorities are cautioning businesses against paying hacker ransoms to help prevent the perpetuation of criminal activities, as cyberattacks continue to escalate in frequency.

Recent high-profile victims include Co-ops, Marks & Spencer, and Jaguar Land Rover. Many of these attacks have been linked to an English-speaking cybercrime group known as “scattered spiders.”

The M&S hack utilized ransomware commonly associated with Russian-speaking cyber gangs, including software designed to lock target IT systems.

The BBC communicated with criminals via the Signal messaging app, found them fluent in English but learned that it wasn’t their primary language, and they employed others for calls.

The hacker remarked, “We do it for profit, not just for the sake of being criminals. I know I’m committing crimes and this isn’t my first or my last.”

They added that the public scrutiny was too intense, leading them to refrain from targeting nurseries again.

Leveraging Palantir AI for Social Work, Submissions, and Children’s Services at Coventry Council

Public sector employees are voicing “significant concerns” following Coventry City Council’s agreement with the US data technology firm Palantir, valued at £500,000 annually.

This contract marks the first collaboration between a UK local authority and a Denver-based organization, which also provides technology to the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) and aids Donald Trump’s initiatives against U.S. immigration policies.

The agreement emerges after the Council’s Children’s Services Division initiated a pilot program utilizing AI for transcribing case notes and summarizing records of social workers. The Council intends to broaden the Palantir system to assist children with special educational needs.

Julie Nugent, the Council’s chief executive, stated the objective is to “enhance internal data integration and service delivery” while “exploring transformative opportunities in artificial intelligence.”

Palantir has secured numerous public sector contracts in the UK, including the deployment of AI to combat organized crime in Leicestershire and assisting in developing a new NHS federated data platform. Keir Starmer visited the company’s Washington office in February, accompanied by CEO and co-founder Alex Karp. Palantir was co-founded by PayPal billionaire Peter Thiel, who supported Trump’s 2016 election campaign.

Unions that represent teachers and other council staff have voiced that this deal raises “serious ethical questions,” with Independent Councillor Grace Lewis urging the council to terminate the contract immediately to “ensure that £500,000 benefits our community.”

“We cannot justify the Council signing a contract with a company that has a well-documented history in supplying arms and surveillance to the IDF and its involvement in NHS privatization while the Council reduces funding for public and voluntary sectors,” Lewis commented.

Coventry has recently started evaluating applications for household support funds through Palantir’s AI. During a councillor’s meeting, a senior official remarked, “To me, it sounds like my brother.”

In correspondence to Nugent, Nicky Downes, co-secretary of the Coventry branch of the National Education Union, pointed out the troubling implications of AI in Palantir’s surveillance and military systems, highlighting concerns about data collection and storage on citizens, especially related to predictive policing.

“There are considerable ethical concerns surrounding Palantir Foundry’s business practices, which is a subsidiary of Palantir,” Downes stated. “Questions also arise regarding the acquisition and utilization of personal data, particularly in relation to ethical considerations in the procurement process and the accompanying risk assessment.

Nugent responded, “We have engaged Palantir for a year to investigate potential transformative solutions in artificial intelligence by applying concepts across numerous essential areas. This aims to establish a business case for further investments and a comprehensive strategy for AI. We acknowledge that the ethical implications of AI procurement hold paramount importance.

A representative from Palantir remarked, “We are enthusiastic about assisting Coventry City Council in enhancing the public services offered by AI. Technology opens up significant opportunities, such as decreasing the time social workers and experts in special education spend on administrative tasks, allowing them to focus on directly aiding vulnerable children.”

They also stated that Palantir is nonpartisan and has worked with various US governmental administrations since its collaboration with the Department of Homeland Security in 2010.

A council spokesperson confirmed that they are exploring ways AI can enhance and streamline services. “In this initiative, we are assessing a variety of AI solutions and technology partners, including Palantir, to support our AI objectives. Our top priority remains to evaluate AI’s value for future investments while maintaining rigorous data protection and governance standards.”

The contract was awarded following standard procurement protocols and met all “strict security and compliance requirements.”
