Monumental explosion detected on enigmatic lifeless star

The night sky is a treasure trove of celestial wonders, and sometimes incredible events happen when no one is watching. Astronomers were thrilled when a satellite captured a rare explosion in space by chance, pointing in the right direction at the right time.

A massive eruption illuminated the galaxy known as M82, which is situated 12 million light-years away from Earth. Initially thought to be caused by a collision between two neutron stars, astronomers discovered that the explosion was actually the result of a superpowerful neutron star emitting an intense gamma-ray burst.

Neutron stars are the remnants of massive stars that exploded as supernovae, forming compact spheres with strong magnetic fields instead of collapsing into black holes.


The observed neutron star was identified as a magnetar due to its extremely powerful magnetic field, more than 10,000 times stronger than a typical neutron star. Magnetars are known to have the strongest magnetic fields in the universe and release energy through massive flares.

In November 2023, ESA’s INTEGRAL satellite accidentally detected an extragalactic flare which lasted only 10 seconds, triggering a gamma-ray burst alert that quickly reached astronomers worldwide.

Dr. Sandro Meleghetti, the lead author of the study published in the journal Nature, emphasized the significance of the burst coming from a nearby bright galaxy, and the subsequent observations failed to detect any visible light, X-ray, or gravitational wave signals.

This event confirmed the first magnetar flare outside the Milky Way, shedding light on the mysterious phenomena associated with these incredibly magnetic neutron stars.

Only three giant flares from galactic magnetars have been confirmed by scientists in the past 50 years, with the 2004 event being so powerful that it impacted Earth’s upper atmosphere akin to solar flares.

‘Incredible Valor’: The Legacy of Grace Hopper in Nvidia’s Monumental $2 Trillion Chip Empire | Computing

In the demanding technical field of semiconductor manufacturing, hardcover book-sized processors stand out. Nvidia’s H-100. On Friday, the Santa Clara, Calif., company was valued at more than $2 trillion. The next step will likely be a chip named after U.S. Navy Rear Adm. “Amazing Grace” Hopper, who was instrumental in designing and implementing the programming language.


Nvidia supplies about 80% of the global market for chips used in AI applications. The company’s H-100 chips (the “H is for hopper”) are now so valuable that they have to be transported in armored vehicles, and demand is so great that some customers have to wait 6 months to receive it.

Hopper’s importance to Nvidia, and to AI computing more generally, was reinforced last summer when Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Fan announced the next generation accelerated computing and generation AI chip, the GH200 Grace Hopper. It was emphasized when they named it a Super Chip.

Hopper was born in New York City in 1906, graduated from Vassar College in 1928 with degrees in mathematics and physics, and joined the Navy after the United States entered World War II following the attack on Pearl Harbor.

According to a biography from Yale University, Initially rejected by the Navy because of her age and small stature, she was commissioned and assigned to Harvard University’s Ship Bureau Computation Project, where she worked on the Mark I, America’s first electromechanical computer, calculating the rocket’s trajectory and reaction force, aircraft gun range table, and minesweeper calibration.

After the war, Hopper joined the Eckhart-Mauchly Computer Corporation (later Sperry Rand), where she pioneered the idea of automatic programming. In 1952, she developed the first compiler, a program that translated written instructions into computer code.

“What I was looking for when I started learning English [programming] was to bring in another whole group who could easily use computers. I kept asking for a more user-friendly language. Most of what we have learned from academics and computer science people has never been adapted to humans,” Hopper explained in a 1980 interview.

Hopper retired as a rear admiral at age 79, making her the oldest active duty officer in the U.S. military. The year before her death in 1992, she was awarded the National Medal of Technology by President George H.W. Bush. She was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor, in 2016.

In a 1983 interview on “60 Minutes”, Hopper was asked if the computer revolution was over. Hopper replied: “No, we’re just getting started. I got a Model T.”

Peru Unearths 4,750-Year-Old Monumental Stone Square

A team of anthropologists from the University of Wyoming, the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the University of New Hampshire has discovered a 4,750-year-old megalithic rotunda measuring 18 meters (60 feet) in diameter at Calakpuma in America's Cajamarca Basin. Peru. It is one of the oldest known monuments and megalithic structures in the northern Andes of Peru, and one of the earliest examples in the Western Hemisphere.

Monumental architecture is central to many aspects of the development of human social organization and social complexity, but the drivers of its origin remain poorly understood.

This form of architecture is intentionally built to be larger and, in some cases, more elaborate than necessary given the desired functionality.

The world's oldest ceremonial monumental architecture, whether represented by megalithic arrangements, large platforms or buildings, or bounded plazas, were larger than immediate households and were often larger than the population of the local area. was the result of a collective or corporate activity by a larger group.

Early well-known examples of this type of ceremonial architecture include Göbekli Tepe in Turkey, Stonehenge in England, and the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt, which were built in 9,000 BC, 2,900 BC, and 2,900 BC, respectively. It was built by 2,650 AD.

Göbekli Tepe is of particular importance here, as it was built during the pre-Pottery Age, during the Neolithic period, by hunter-gatherer-forager tribes who were at the pinnacle of sedentary living and food production.

Early examples of monuments in the Western Hemisphere include Watson Brake and Poverty Point, which date to 3400 BC and 1700 BC, respectively.

The newly discovered megalithic square is Late preceramicIt dates back to 2850 BC.

The structure is located at the Calapuma archaeological site in the Cajamarca Basin in the northern Peruvian Andes and is built of large, free-standing, vertically placed megaliths.

This construction method has never been reported in the Andes and is different from other monumental rotunda in the region.

“This structure was built about 100 years before the Great Pyramids of Egypt, around the same time as Stonehenge,” said Dr. Jason Toohey, an anthropologist at the University of Wyoming.

“It was probably a meeting place and a ceremonial place for the early people who lived in this part of the Cajamarca Valley.”

“These people were primarily hunter-gatherers, and may have only recently begun growing crops and domesticating animals.”

Kalakpuma Square is formed by two concentric walls, approximately 18 meters in diameter.

“The Late Preceramic Period, during which Plaza Calapuma was constructed, was a period of socio-economic transition in the Andes,” the researchers said.

“On the central coast, the communities that came together to build giant mounds in places like Caral were not yet full-time farmers, but engaged in complex systems of exchange with coastal fishing villages.”

“Inland communities grew some food and industrial crops, but also relied on hunting and trading seafood.”

“In the northern highlands of Peru, the people who built the plazas of Calapuma may have begun experimenting with food production, but they were also probably still relatively mobile hunter-gatherers.”

“Like Nanchoc centuries earlier, groups in Cajamarca may have engaged in the construction of enterprises in Calapuma's plaza and subsequently repeatedly negotiated group identity there through the integration of events and perhaps feasts.”

“The construction of Late Pre-Peraque monumental ceremonial buildings in the coastal and highlands of the central Andes probably originated from small groups, as was the case with earlier monumental mass buildings outside the Andean region of South America, such as Göbekli Tepe. It represented a change in the social world with changes in the associated belief systems into more collective and locally focused beliefs and actions.”
