Feedback often seeks the perfect gift for Mrs. Feedback, a challenging endeavor considering her penchant for ordering books before discovering they even exist.

This is why I found myself momentarily fascinated by what’s referred to as “smart jewelry.” Picture wearable tech like Fitbit or Apple Watch that tracks heart rates and more.

Recently, South China Morning Post noted: luxury brands such as Gucci, Hermès, Tag Heuer, and Vertu are merging Silicon Valley technology with exquisite European craftsmanship. For instance, there’s the Gucci×Ouura Ring, which elegantly incorporates health-monitoring tech to track sleep, heart rate, temperature, activity, and more. However, it’s a limited edition, with used items on eBay starting at £390 and going up from there.

Feedback might suggest that at least one method is misdirected. As blue sky user Zack Pizzaz highlighted on social media, wedding rings that monitor every emotion and movement of their wearers could very well belong in the realm of dystopian fiction—something reminiscent of a Margaret Atwood story. However, is there really a business proposing that couples exchange smart rings to keep tabs on each other?

Ah, perhaps it’s not a mistake; a company is indeed suggesting just that. Based on your relationship dynamics, you may or may not have heard of the dating app RAW, which encourages users to send only unfiltered photos to fend off catfishing. Now, they are launching a spinoff called Raw Ring, which features AI with a heart rate and temperature sensor, plus audio tracking.

According to co-founder Marina Anderson, the ring “functions like a fingertip vest, tracking heart rate, temperature, and connection levels with your partner. When something happens, you’re in the know.” As reported on her profile, she believes that such emotional surveillance could enrich relationships.

Or as the Raw Ring website boldly states, “Marriage will evolve, and so will loyalty. Sacred vows will become digital. Raw’s mission? To make true love traceable.”

We mentioned this to Mrs. Feedback, who firmly stated that purchasing one of these items would lead to divorce and leave you to seek comfort elsewhere—perhaps a book token will suffice.

Think Big

Here’s another headline, this time from the UK talk radio station LBC: ‘Green Party Deputy Leader Zack Polanski admitted to using hypnosis in the past to “enhance” women’s breasts. Apparently, back in 2013, Polanski worked at a hypnotherapy clinic in London where hypnosis was employed to assist women in acquiring larger breasts, as reported by the Sun under their sensational headlines: Tit-Notised. Polanski has since apologized for this portion of his career.

Aside from tackling the ethics of this practice, neuroscientist Dean Burnett expressed his intrigue on the matter, wondering if there are potential mechanisms within the psyche—akin to how drivers can’t help but be fascinated by accidents. After all, the link between mind and body is so profound that our mental state can influence our immune response and gut health. Burnett referenced cases such as pseudocyesis, where a woman genuinely believes she is pregnant, displaying symptoms without being so.

If you think Polanski might be onto something, think again. Burnett points out that this reasoning is a prime example of “how easy it is to construct a compelling claim through selective cherry-picking of data.” He continues to explain that hypnosis is not powerful enough to serve as a reliable method for breast augmentation.

Additionally, if hypnosis were genuinely so effective, wouldn’t women with new breasts also produce milk?

Heroin and Chips

On the theme of dubious correlations (as discussed in Feedback, July 5th), Martin Kautchmann has spotlighted Tyler Bigen’s entertaining site, tylervigen.com/spurious-correlations, which catalogues correlations that lack real significance. For instance, UFO sightings in Rhode Island correlate beautifully with the success rates of climbing Mount Everest, while Iowa City’s air quality saw a decrease in lockstep with the number of library technicians.

Such correlations may seem absurd, but they can be amusing. Barry Dexter recalls a statement he used in his teaching: “All heroin addicts started with milk.”

Lastly, Dan Salmons shares his experience working with a “well-known credit card company” during the introduction of Chip and Pin technology, stating, “I demonstrated to my colleagues that the quantity of cards in circulation correlated strongly with the prices of potatoes and steel,” says Dan. “Naturally, this is precisely what one would anticipate.”

Researchers unearth massive dinosaur tracks dating back 167 million years on the Isle of Skye

Paleontologists have discovered 131 large theropods and sauropods in the formations of the central Jurassic Kirmalag at Prince Charles’s point, located on the northwest coast of the Troternas Peninsula in Sky.

The rocks of Isle of Skye are rich in dinosaur footprints, providing insight into the distribution and behavior of dinosaurs at critical times of evolution.

The newly discovered footprint was left in the wavy sands of an ancient subtropical lagoon dating back to the mid-Jurassic period about 167 million years ago.

The footprint is 25-60 cm long and comes in two types. This is a round “Tyre-Size” track, made by three untidy trucks left by Bipedal: a carnivorous theropod, a tetrapod, and a long-necked sauropod.

Based on comparisons with previous fossil discoveries, the most likely truck maker is Megalosaurus Similar to early branching members of the Neosauropod group CethiosaurusBoth are known from British skeletal ruins.

According to paleontologists, many of these footprints occur together in successive steps.

The longest of these trackways is over 12m, among the longest known examples from the Isle of Skye.

The spacing and orientation of these trackways represent slow walking without consistent orientation or interaction with each other, and what is probably left by the dinosaurs is casually crushed at slightly different times.

The site at Prince Charles’s point supports previous evidence that the Jurassic Sauropod frequently visited Scottish lagoons.

However, this site contains a higher percentage of theropod tracks than similar locales, perhaps indicating differences in the environment between these ancient lagoons.

The site also does not have footprints from other dinosaurs such as Stegosaurus and Ornithopods, but it remains unclear whether these animals really do not exist in this environment or simply did not leave a mark on this site.

“Prince Charles’s footprint at points provides fascinating insight into the behavior and environmental distribution of meat-eating theropods and plant-eating long-necked sauropods during key periods of evolution.”

“In Sky, these dinosaurs obviously preferred shallow, submerged lagoon environments to muddy air exposed.”

“Interestingly, this site also has historical significance as a location for Skye, where Prince Bonnie landed and hidden while flying through Scotland following the Battle of Culloden.”

Fossilized tracks of predatory and plant-eating dinosaurs found in the UK dating back to 166 million years ago

Paleontologists discovered hundreds of different dinosaur footprints, including one left by a ferocious 9-meter (29.5-foot) predator megalosaurus Dewar’s Farm Quarry in Oxfordshire, England, by a herbivorous dinosaur up to twice its size.

Professor Kirsty Edgar from the University of Birmingham said: “These footprints provide a special window into the lives of dinosaurs, revealing details about their movements, interactions and the tropical environments they lived in. ” he said.

Professor Edgar and colleagues have unearthed five vast dinosaur footprints dating back to the mid-Jurassic period, some 166 million years ago.

The longest continuous track was over 150 m (492 ft) long.

Four of the orbits were created by giant, long-necked herbivorous dinosaurs called sauropods. cetiosaurusa cousin of the famous brassica, which can grow up to 18 meters (59 ft) in length. diplodocus.

The fifth orbit was created by a carnivorous theropod dinosaur megalosaurusit was characterized by large three-toed feet with claws.

Parts of the site show intersecting carnivore and herbivore tracks, raising questions about whether and how the two were interacting.

Paleontologists worked together to discover around 200 footprints and used aerial drone photography to build a detailed 3D model of the site.

Professor Richard Butler, from the University of Birmingham, said: “There is much more we can learn from this site. It is an important part of our global heritage.”

“Our 3D model will allow researchers to continue their studies and make this fascinating part of our past accessible for generations to come.”

During the excavation, researchers took more than 20,000 images of the footprints.

These provide a wealth of material for further research and education, providing valuable information about how these dinosaurs walked, their speed, size, whether they interacted, and how they interacted. May provide insight.

Utilizing DNA from Polar Bear Snow Tracks to Support Conservation efforts

Researchers have developed a breakthrough method to protect polar bears by analyzing DNA from footprints in the snow. This non-invasive technique can also be applied to other snow-dwelling animals such as lynx and snow leopards, providing a safer and more efficient way to collect data essential to wildlife conservation.

Innovative forensic techniques in preservation

The scientists were inspired by forensic techniques that can be applied to trace amounts of degraded DNA samples. “Many Inuit have expressed concerns about invasive research methods,” said the article’s author, Elizabeth Krueger of the World Wildlife Fund. “People are concerned about the welfare of individual polar bears and the health and safety of those who may later harvest the bears. This is one reason we are so excited about new methods like this. The person collecting the samples does not need to see or even be seen by the polar bear.”

Environmental DNA: a non-invasive tool

A common form of environmental DNA is deposited when animals defecate. However, the quality of DNA is not always sufficient for the individual-level analysis required for preservation. Furthermore, in the case of territorial animals like her other two, seed Scientists tested lynx and snow leopards, and the collection of faeces can affect the animals’ behavior. So the researchers focused on the skin cells in snowy footprints.

Real-world tracking and sampling

The researchers collected snow from individual footprints made by polar bears in Alaska and Eurasian lynx in Sweden in the wild and in captivity. They also collected snow from footprints made by captive snow leopards. Additional substances such as hair, saliva, and mucus were also sampled to ensure that the traces yielded accurate genotypes.

Twenty-four wild polar bear tracks and 44 wild lynx tracks were sampled. The researchers melted and filtered the snow to collect environmental DNA and analyzed the microsatellites. Although the concentration of DNA recovered from footprints collected in the wild was very low, we were able to recover nuclear DNA from 87.5% of wild polar bear footprints and 59.1% of wild lynx footprints. We were able to genotype 13 of the wild polar bear samples and identify 12 different individuals.

They were able to genotype 11% of the lynx footprints, but this percentage increased significantly when scientists examined only footprints sampled by trained personnel. They were able to recover nuclear DNA from 76% of the samples collected by trained personnel and genotype 24% of the samples.

A step-by-step approach

This technology has great potential to inform conservation of these animals, better understand animal populations and behavior, and manage conflicts with humans through accurate animal identification. Although non-invasive sampling has a low success rate, it is easy to collect and can greatly expand sample size.

“We hope this method will be adopted by the polar bear research community as a new way to collect information about polar bears, with the participation of hunters, volunteers, and indigenous communities,” Lancaster said. “We also hope that this method can be extended to other animals that live in snowy environments. We have started by showing that this method works for lynx and snow leopards as well. I did.”
