Video games in 2025 offered a plethora of unique and spectacular experiences, from a whimsical world brimming with magical creatures to an impressively detailed depiction of feudal Japan. Yet, as the year winds down, some intriguing highlights emerge. The psychological horror title “Sleep Awake” centers around synth rock innovator Gary Numan, who takes on the rather dull role of a colossal floating head known as Hypnos.
This unexpected cameo doesn’t fully represent the overall tone of the game. The hours leading to Numan’s appearance are filled with melancholy rather than chaos. Players navigate through the decaying streets of what may be the final city on Earth. This setting showcases a remarkable level of creativity. The story unfolds through the perspective of a young woman named Katya, who traverses rooftops, surveys the desolate wasteland, and delves into convoluted alleyways. The darkness and surreal logic echo the haunting underground engravings of Italian artist Piranesi.
How did Earth become so uninhabitable, leading to the extinction of life? That’s a mystery we’ll never uncover. Instead, Katya grapples with immediate dangers. Falling asleep poses a threat of vanishing into a bizarre, unreachable realm due to a condition known as Hush. Like others endlessly fatigued in this world, Katya instills arousal serum drops into her eyes. Instantly, she is flooded with psychedelic visions and a riot of colors. It appears her plans are slipping away, much like everyone else’s. The remnants of society have been obliterated by the sleep-deprived paranoia of rival factions.
Initially driven by a desire to care for an aging relative, Katya navigates the game’s haunting, decaying environments from a first-person viewpoint. At one stage, you find yourself on a cultist’s territory, wearing a gas mask, prompting you to sneak past them by crouching under walls or surfaces to stay out of sight. But the tension is minimal; enemies follow predictable patrol paths with extremely wide detection ranges. Ultimately, this makes for a lackluster game of hide and seek.
“Sleep Awake” further disappoints in its gameplay innovation. Tasks include rolling a cart to short-circuit an electrical breaker and locating conveniently placed keycards to unlock doors. Gradually, the city’s illumination fades, revealing that you are progressing through a beautifully adorned tunnel. Surprisingly, this tunnel resembles an amusement park ghost train—light, engaging, but not particularly frightening.
This is unfortunate because “Sleep Awake” is visually striking. The exploration is interspersed with dark yet gorgeous FMV sequences, showcasing eerie silhouettes of trees against a blood-red sky and showcasing bubbling liquids in extreme close-up. At times, these unsettling visuals blend seamlessly with actual 3D environments, achieving a beautifully surreal arthouse aesthetic. This surreal vibe extends to the death screens, where being struck in the head by an enemy causes you to step out of darkness toward a brilliantly lit door. As you do so, the space morphs in real-time, resembling a hallucination, culminating in an auto-save.
The death screen stands out as a rare instance where “Sleep Awake” captures something reminiscent of dream logic and the peculiar, blurred moments between states of wakefulness and sleep. Most of the time, this narcoleptic nightmare merely showcases its psychedelic aesthetics (complete with the floating Numan), lacking interactive depth. Overall, it’s too straightforward and lacks intrigue in critical areas. You might find yourself ready to sleep now.

Denisovans, an enigmatic group of ancient humans, were initially recognized solely through their DNA, but now they have a distinct appearance.
With molecular data, Qiaomei Fu and her team at the Institute for Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology have validated long-held suspicions among researchers.
This aligns with additional evidence that Denisovans were robust and heavyset. “I believe we observe individuals weighing around 100 kg of lean body mass: a truly massive individual,” stated Bens Viola, who was not part of the research team from the University of Toronto, Canada.
Denisovans were first discovered in 2010 in the Denisova Cave in Siberia’s Altai Mountains, where researchers found fragments of an unknown ancient hominin’s finger bone. The preserved DNA concluded that it was neither modern humans (Homo sapiens) nor Neanderthals (Homo neanderthalensis), but rather an entirely new species.
Moreover, genetic findings indicated that Denisovans interbred with contemporary humans. Today, populations in Southeast Asia and Melanesia carry up to 5% of Denisovan DNA, signifying their earlier presence in Asia.
Following these revelations, researchers commenced their quest for Denisovan fossils in both fieldwork and museum collections. Several fossils have since been discovered, with a notable mandible found in the Baishaya Karst Cave on the Tibetan Plateau, confirmed through fossil and DNA protein analysis from surrounding sediments. Recently, a jawbone recovered from the Peng Channel off Taiwan’s coast was also confirmed as Denisovan through preserved proteins.
Nevertheless, there remained frustrating gaps, as all confirmed Denisovan fossils obtained via molecular evidence were small, leading to limited insight. Conversely, more complete fossils from Asia were considered candidate Denisovan remains, yet none yielded molecular evidence.
Fu and her team aimed to extract preserved DNA or proteins from the human skull discovered in Harbin, northeastern China. This skull, kept under wraps for decades, was first described in 2021 and is notably large and robust, characterized by prominent brow ridges and brain size similar to modern humans. It has been dubbed Homo longi—or Dragon Man—by its discoverer.
“My impression is that this specimen is representative of what we would expect Denisovan to be, in both size and context,” Viola remarked.
Fu noted that recovering preserved molecules from the Harbin skull was an arduous task. While her team struggled to obtain DNA from the bones, they successfully retrieved 95 proteins, including three variants unique to Denisovans.
Seeking further evidence, Fu turned to dental calculus, a hardened plaque that forms on teeth, which yielded mitochondrial DNA inherited from its maternal lineage. Although she described the quantity as “small,” it was sufficient to confirm the specimen as Denisovan.
“It’s an astonishing outcome, and the efforts made were commendable,” said Saman Subroun from the National Research Centre in Burgos, Spain. “I believe many researchers tend to overlook dental calculus in genetic studies.”
With the identification of the robust Harbin skull as Denisovan, the long-suspected notion of their substantial size is now validated.
“There was a clue,” Brown noted.
The reason for their size remains unclear. Neanderthals’ robust build is linked to the cold climates of Europe and West Asia where they thrived. While Denisovan sites, including Denisova Cave and the Tibetan Plateau, were also cold, others were tropical. “We need to contemplate the implications of this,” Viola stated.
It’s possible that Denisovans varied over time. The fragments from Denisova Cave suggest two distinct groups existed: one from 217,000 to 106,000 years ago and another from 84,000 to 52,000 years ago. The Harbin skull dates back at least 146,000 years, with Fu discovering that its proteins and mitochondrial DNA align with the older group. Nevertheless, we’ve yet to locate any large Denisovan fossils in contemporary times, leaving their full appearance uncertain.
“Numerous different groups inhabited the landscape independently, often isolated from each other for tens of thousands of years,” Viola remarked. We should not presume they all bore a similar appearance.
Dr. Paul Uribe, a former military pathologist who consulted nationwide and assisted in solving a series of insulin-related murders at a veteran hospital in West Virginia, noted to NBC News that there are insufficient protocols to guide pathologists and emergency room doctors in effectively managing such cases.
“You’re not going to accidentally stumble upon an insulin murder,” Uribe remarked. “You must have a suspect and actively search for it; if you’re not investigating, you won’t discover it.”

While these crimes are uncommon, Uribe highlighted an alarming increase in related incidents across the U.S. In Pennsylvania, several nurses confessed to attempting to murder 19 patients using insulin across five facilities between 2020 and 2023, resulting in 17 fatalities. Additionally, at the West Virginia Veterans Hospital, nurses confessed to killing seven patients with insulin in 2021.
Uribe pointed out that no state has officially established protocols for emergency room physicians and medical inspectors regarding insulin-related cases, noting that only West Virginia has attempted to address this significant oversight. Legislation introduced this year aims to obligate emergency rooms to test for insulin in patients exhibiting symptoms of insulin poisoning.
Jonathan Jones, former president of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine, expressed concerns regarding insulin overdoses but asserted that health care should not be legislated.
“The best medical care is delivered by well-educated, trained, and board-certified physicians, not legislators,” he stated in an email to NBC News. “We are committed to continuous medical education regarding this issue and support the standards for specialist physicians, but we oppose mandatory treatment directives.”
He declined to comment on whether emergency rooms should adopt stricter guidelines.
When asked if forensic pathologists need improved protocols, Reade Quinton, president of the National Association of Medical Examiners, replied, “I’m not sure that’s the right question. What medical examiners require is access to field information, witness statements, and medical records without obstruction.”

The chief sponsor of the West Virginia bill did not respond to requests for comment. Nevertheless, the parents of Michael Cochran, after whom the bill is named, believe this legislation could serve as a model for the nation and help others avoid the painful search for answers they endured for years.
“They shouldn’t have to wait for answers as we did,” remarked Cochran’s mother, Donna Bolt, to Dateline. “Six years.”
Seven deceased patients at VA Hospital
Uribe’s investigation into insulin-related murders began at the Veterans Hospital in Clarksburg, West Virginia, where he was tasked with examining a series of mysterious deaths among elderly patients in late 2018.
These occurrences can result from excessive insulin doses, which regulate blood glucose levels in diabetic patients.
Some veterans were diabetic, Uribe recalled, while others were not. He was requested to uncover a definitive piece of evidence that could confirm insulin as the murder weapon.
For emergency room doctors and pathologists, he noted, identifying such cases is complicated due to insulin’s rapid metabolism. The “C-peptide” test referenced in West Virginia law can detect insulin, but timing is crucial. It must be conducted before any treatment interventions for hypoglycemia are started.
“If glucose is administered, it triggers the body’s natural insulin release, negating the C-peptide measurement,” he explained.
Furthermore, many small hospitals lack access to these specific tests.
Uribe described two primary methods for pathologists to detect insulin. One prevalent method involves injection, which may leave temporary traces in body tissues at the injection site. Insulin can also be found in postmortem vitreous fluid from the eye, he noted.
In West Virginia, testing of tissue samples from seven veterans’ remains revealed trace amounts of insulin in some victims, including those without diabetes or any prior prescriptions for the drug.
“This provided conclusive evidence that they had been injected with insulin,” he stated.

Nursing assistant Letta Mays was later identified as the prime suspect in this case. She confessed to administering a lethal dose of insulin, pleaded guilty to seven counts of second-degree murder and one count of assault with intent to murder concerning the death of an eighth man. Mays was sentenced to seven life terms.
Deadly dose from a pharmacist
In Uribe’s subsequent case, pharmacist Natalie Cochran was convicted in January for giving her husband a lethal dose of drugs amid a conspiracy to cover up millions in fraudulent activities involving friends and relatives.
Resolving this case took several years.
In February 2019, Michael Cochran was found unresponsive and later transitioned from a ventilator to hospice care at the age of 38. His death certificate classified his cause of death as “natural.”

Michael Cochran’s hospital records indicated that upon admission, his blood sugar levels were dangerously low, despite his lack of any diabetes history, Uribe informed. Unfortunately, insulin testing was not conducted at that time.
Still, West Virginia State Police detective Tim Bledsoe suspected Natalie Cochran’s involvement in her husband’s demise. During a search of her home, a partially used vial of insulin was discovered in the refrigerator.
When Bledsoe questioned Natalie about the vial, she claimed it was meant for her neighbor’s diabetic son. However, the neighbor, Jennifer Davis, contradicted this, stating that Natalie had asked for insulin for herself to aid recovery from a fake cancer diagnosis that prosecutors argued she later fabricated.
Davis recalled that Natalie requested insulin the same morning Michael first became ill.
Two years after Michael Cochran’s death, his wife was charged with murder. An autopsy commenced seven months after his passing, but by then, his body was significantly decomposed, leading medical inspectors to classify the cause of death as undetermined, according to Bledsoe.
The timeline regarding the autopsy’s delay and whether insulin testing was conducted post-mortem remains unclear. The West Virginia Department of Health and the Office of Personnel, which oversees medical examinations, did not respond to inquiries.
Uribe expressed skepticism that any post-mortem evidence of insulin could have been retrieved given the elapsed time between Michael’s drug administration and his death.
The inconclusive findings, combined with the absence of concrete evidence, led the Raleigh County District Attorney to lower the charges, according to Tom Truman, the current prosecutor.
“If you lack a medical examiner advocating murder, that’s a significant concern,” he remarked to Dateline.
Re-examination yields clarity
However, two years later, the fees were re-evaluated after Uribe was invited to investigate further. During the new autopsy and examination, Uribe searched for potential injection marks, but by this time, Michael’s body had severely deteriorated, preventing any tests from being taken.
Nonetheless, Uribe noted that potential explanations for Michael Cochran’s hypoglycemia, such as infections and severe sepsis, were not documented in his medical records. Considering the circumstances surrounding his death, Uribe classified it as an insulin murder.
During the trial, the endocrinologist who testified for the prosecution conceded that there was no clear explanation for Michael Cochran’s low blood sugar levels.

Natalie Cochran’s defense attorneys acknowledged her involvement in fraudulent activities with various associates, whereby she also pleaded guilty to a separate federal fraud and money laundering case; however, they insisted that she was innocent of her husband’s death.
On January 29th, following two hours of deliberation, the jury found Natalie Cochran guilty of first-degree murder. She received a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
For Uribe, this case, alongside others at the Veterans Hospital, underscores an urgent need for improved insulin overdose protocols.
Such protocols could assist physicians in recognizing red flags like unexplained hypokalemia, which arises from critically low blood sugar levels in non-diabetic patients or from fatal excessive insulin use.
Additionally, he emphasized the need for C-peptide testing to be done prior to any treatment.
Pathologists should look for potential injection sites and conduct vitreous humor tests, he advised.
“If insulin can be detected in the vitreous fluid of someone with no history of diabetes or prior prescriptions, it could substantiate a case,” he concluded.
“Zosia” was buried with a padlock on her leg and an iron sickle around her neck, and was never supposed to come back to life.
The young woman buried in an unmarked cemetery in Pien, northern Poland, was one of dozens of people feared by her neighbors to be “vampires.”
Now, a team of scientists has used DNA, 3D printing, and clay modeling to reconstruct Zosia’s 400-year-old face, revealing a human story buried in supernatural beliefs.
“In a way, it’s really ironic,” says Swedish archaeologist Oskar Nilsson. “The people who buried her did everything they could to prevent her from rising from the dead…We did everything we could to bring her back to life.”

Zosia, as it was named by local residents, was discovered in 2022 by a team of archaeologists from Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń.
Zosia was between 18 and 20 years old at the time of her death, and analysis of her skull suggested she suffered from a health condition that could cause fainting, severe headaches and even mental health problems, Nilsson said.
According to Nicolaus Copernicus’ team, sickles, padlocks and certain types of wood found in graveyards were all believed at the time to have magical properties that could protect against vampires.
Zosia’s grave was grave number 75 in an unmarked cemetery on the outskirts of Pien, a city north of Bydgoszcz. Among the other bodies found at the scene was a “vampire” child who was buried face down with a padlock at his feet as well.
Little is known about Zosia’s life, but Nilsson and Pien’s research team believe that the items with which she was buried indicate that she came from a wealthy (possibly aristocratic) family.
Nilsson suggests that the war-torn 17th-century Europe in which she lived created a climate of fear in which belief in supernatural monsters was common.
Nilsson’s recreation began by creating a 3D-printed replica of the skull, then gradually built up layers of clay “muscle by muscle” to form a lifelike face.
He combines bone structure with information about gender, age, ethnicity, and approximate weight to estimate the depth of facial features.
“It’s emotional to see a face come back from the dead, especially when you know this young girl’s story,” Nilsson says.
Nilsson said he wanted to bring Zosia back “as a human being, not as a buried monster.”
I I've been watching the last few episodes of the Fallout series on Prime Video. It's funny and gory, sometimes sentimental, and sometimes silly. Fallout's ensemble cast – highlighted by Walton Goggins' near-immortal ghoul and Ella Purnell's wide-eyed vault-dweller – deftly compartmentalize the different facets of the game's personality. As director Jonathan Nolan pointed out in an interview last week with Bethesda's Todd Howard, game director, this is a common device in television storytelling, but rare in games. When I interviewed him over the years, he talked about how players and systems interact to create new stories, and how games make what they do in-game real and meaningful. He spoke eloquently about the unique mechanism that makes you feel as though you are in the dark. You can’t do that with TV or movies. But as the Fallout show proves, if it’s made by people who really understand it, can We tell unique stories that still capture the essence of the games people love.
Fallout is great because, while this is also true of other successful game-to-movie adaptations in recent years, Appearance Yes, the sets are perfect, and they nail the game’s retro-future, nostalgic aesthetic. That’s because Nolan and screenwriters Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner actually played Fallout, understood it, and felt the power of its storytelling for themselves. They tested it by shining a light on it and found that a camera with a TMS wafer over the lens could reflect just 1.3% of the light while transmitting enough light to take clear photos. . The types of planets thought to be able to support life may actually be covered in hot magma. Previously thought to have oceans of liquid water, the chemistry of these so-called high sea exoplanets may instead indicate oceans of magma.
Oliver Shortle Researchers from the University of Cambridge used observations from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) of the exoplanet K2-18b to reach this conclusion. This world is typically Hycean. This is the name given to a planet with a hydrogen-rich atmosphere above a liquid ocean. These planets also tend to be between Earth and Neptune in size, and the chemicals in their atmospheres suggest the presence of liquid water on their surfaces, making them a prime search for extraterrestrial life. It has become a target.
But recent models of K2-18b's climate suggest it may be hotter than previously thought, hot enough to cause oceans of water to boil away long ago. “From a theoretical perspective regarding the situation here on Earth, it's like the ground is moving beneath our feet,” Schotle says.
The researchers investigated how it would affect Earth's atmospheric chemistry if these oceans were made of magma instead of water. This would be consistent with the expected high temperatures. They found this to be consistent with his JWST observations as well as water bodies.
“These two fundamentally different regimes are very similar,” Schotle says. “Detecting habitable conditions for super-Earths and sub-Neptune-sized planets will be more complex than we expected.”
This means that we probably need more detailed data to tell the difference between a potentially habitable world with oceans of water and a world of burning, inhospitable magma. For K2-18b, Schotle said his additional JWST observations over the next few years should resolve this issue. And when it comes to other Heim worlds, we may need to develop new ideas for how to find liquid water.
