Google to Pay $1.4 Billion to Settle Dual Privacy Lawsuits

On Friday, Google consented to pay Texas $1.4 billion, facing accusations of violating state residents’ privacy related to two lawsuits concerning location tracking, search history, and facial recognition data collection.

Attorney General Ken Paxton, who facilitated the settlement, initiated a lawsuit in 2022 under Texas’ data privacy and deceptive trade practices legislation. Less than a year later, he achieved a $1.4 billion settlement with Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram.

This settlement marks another legal challenge for the tech giant. In the last two years, Google has faced a series of antitrust cases, revealing its significant control over app stores, search engines, and advertising technology. Recent legal battles have sought to counter the U.S. government’s requests to break up the company.

“Big tech must adhere to the law,” Paxton stated.

Google spokesperson José Castañeda remarked that the company has already revised its product policies. “This resolves numerous longstanding claims, many of which have found resolution elsewhere,” he noted.

Privacy concerns have caused significant friction between tech corporations and regulators in recent years. In the absence of federal privacy regulations, states like Texas and Washington have enacted laws to limit the collection of facial, voice, and other biometric data.

Google and Meta have been among the leading companies challenged under these regulations. Texas law, known as the Capture or Use of Biometric Identifiers, mandates that companies obtain consent before utilizing features like facial and speech recognition technology. Violators can face penalties of up to $25,000 per breach.

The lawsuit under this law centers on the Google Photos app, which facilitates searching for images of specific individuals. Future Google cameras may issue alerts upon recognizing visitors at a door. Moreover, Google Assistant is designed to learn and respond to inquiries from up to six users.

Mr. Paxton filed another lawsuit claiming that Google misled Texans by tracking their personal location data, even when they believed they had disabled the feature. He asserted additional grievances in the lawsuit, alleging that Google’s private browsing settings (known as Incognito Mode) were not genuinely private. These cases were filed under the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act.

“For years, filmmakers have been able to use a variety of techniques to show the actors multiple times in the same scene,” says Daniel Harrington, a London-based VFX artist and compositor. “In the parent’s trap, the split screen allowed the same actor to occupy both sides of the frame, while the social network used motion controls to portray the Winkleboss twins by repeating precise camera movements.”

However, before you tackle the technology, there is a brief history of dual roles. Because the concept is almost as old as the film itself. In 1898, pioneer Georges Méliès had already double-exposed to capture the portrait twice within the same frame. His methods jumped to feature films in 1917 when actor William Farnham performed on opposite sides of himself in Dickens’s two city tales adaptation.

The following year, Mary Pickford played dual roles in Stella Maris using new split screen technology that has been used for decades in films such as Deadlinger, Adaptation, and Double Impact of Jean-Claude Van Dam’s Asquado-Shooded Ask Ask. But today, split screening is just one of many tools in the dual-roll toybox. “Ultimately, the success of the fantasy depends on the synergy between onset preparation and post-production artistry,” says Harrington. “Digital effects can be increasingly refined, but when built on a strong practical foundation, they are still the most effective. Therefore, on set, consistent lighting, accurate framing, and stand-in are important to ensure seamless synthesis later. Without these elements, even the most sophisticated digital tools will struggle to create compelling results. It is teamwork, exemplified not only by films but also by television series such as Orphan Black.”

And while Jones doesn’t think there’s a single catalyst for the current moment of a dual-roll project, “it’s probably a kind of happy accident,” he says.

“It wasn’t Option 10, and probably not even five years ago,” says Jones. “But even this is not optimal for dual roles. You will need to find someone with similar features and proportions. Baseline performances will come from the stand-in rather than the actor. What’s more, “Off-the-Peg” deepfake technology certainly doesn’t suit IMAX quality at the moment, so VFX work is necessary to be trusted. ”

Webb discovers complex organic compounds in interstellar ice approaching dual protostars

Complex organic molecules (COM) are molecules with six or more atoms, including at least one carbon atom.

These materials are the raw material for future exoplanetary systems and are therefore of essential importance in understanding the chemical complexity developed in star-forming regions.

If this material becomes available in a primitive planetary system, it could facilitate the planet's habitability.

In a new study, astronomers Will Rocha, Harold Linnaerts and colleagues at Leiden University used Webb's mid-infrared instrument to determine the extent of COM ice in two protostars, NGC 1333 IRAS 2A and IRAS 23385+6053. We investigated the characteristics.

They were able to identify a variety of COMs, including ethanol (alcohol) and perhaps acetic acid (a component of vinegar).

The researchers also detected simpler molecules such as formic acid, methane, formaldehyde, and sulfur dioxide.

“Sulfur-containing compounds, such as sulfur dioxide, played an important role in promoting metabolic reactions on early Earth,” the researchers said.

“Of particular interest is that one of the investigated origins, NGC 1333 IRAS 2A, is characterized as a low-mass protostar.”

“NGC 1333 IRAS 2A may resemble the early stages of our solar system.”
