Ghost of Yōtei Review: A Stunningly Brutal Samurai Revenge Quest | Gaming

The Ghost horse of Yotei, named Mokizuki, translates to the traditional Japanese term for “full moon.” I truly believe she is the most unfortunate creature in all of the North. The button needed to summon her is alarmingly close to the one used to heal my samurai during combat, leading to frequent mishaps where I inadvertently call her into a Koittic 7-on-1 skirmish. Mochizuki often intercepts arrows with her fur and deflects sword strikes from my outlaw adversaries to keep them at bay. At times, she simply stands at the fringes of the conflict, quietly waiting to steady my nerves so that I can dispatch the villains and return to picturesque escapades in the Ezo region.

Ghost of Yotei serves as a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, a revered samurai action game from the American studio Punch released in 2020. Visually, it consistently impresses, regardless of your undertaking. Yet, the majestic framing typical of open-world titles can appear somewhat absurd when you accidentally summon horses for battle or ignite flames, as they don’t quite mesh with the whimsical nature of players.

I realized that the ghosts of Tsushima were not only breathtaking but also peculiarly superficial. Their protagonist, Jin, frequently expressed his discomfort with the act of stealthily taking down Mongol invaders to save his island. In contrast, the heroine of Yotei, Ats, embraces her role as the vengeful specter much more comfortably. The narrative isn’t particularly groundbreaking; Ats’ family falls victim to a group of masked outlaws known as the Yotei Six, prompting her to hunt them down for vengeance. Star Erika Ishii delivers a stellar performance as a stoic killer, making me completely invested in Atsu’s quest for blood. Despite several other characters serving as reminders of retribution, she relentlessly eliminates her foes, giving off an impression that she relishes in it.

Honestly, I find it enjoyable. Yotei’s ghostly battles are both exquisite and brutal. You quickly grasp the mechanics of evasion, substitution, and timing while exploring Ezo, equipping yourself with dual katana, a spear, a bow, and the massive Yamato sword for more engaging fights. The setup for confrontations maintains a consistent level of challenge. Atsu faces opponents often twice her size, with some strikes sufficient to end her battles. I enjoy numerous challenging action games, from Monster Hunter to Elden Ring, yet despite over 20 hours of dueling and exploration, I still feel my enemies succumb to me with minimal effort, thus keeping the experience fresh.

Among this year’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows, also set in historical Japan, Yotei’s Ghost ranks as one of the most visually stunning games I’ve encountered. The stunning natural beauty of Japan, with its ginkgo trees, distant mountains, and fish-filled rivers, is digitally honored (you can spear them for dinner). It is a world crafted for admiration. Navigate with your senses rather than the map on your screen; the wind guides you on where to go next in the story, enabling leisurely exploration. Intriguingly, with your PS5 controller, you can roast fish over a fire, strum a Shamisen, or dab ink onto a canvas. Revisiting Atsu’s memories in familiar places allows for a reflection on her life before it spiraled into violence.

The blend of traditional Japanese instruments with old Western rhythms marks the game as set in 1600s Japan through an American lens. While it may feature more action, blood, and death-defying climbs than typical samurai movies, is that truly a downside? If anything, Tsushima’s ghosts were hampered by a rigid adherence to a somber tone that conflicted with the game’s high body count. Yotei doesn’t complicate matters as the assassin’s creed does, making it fairly straightforward and enjoyable. Whenever I grew weary of pursuing one target, it was easy to find another.

As Atsu’s legend amplifies, the Ezo populace begins to leave offerings for the vengeful onryō (Bloodthirsty Ghost), seeking to rid the land of its oppressors. As you traverse Ezo, you truly start to feel a connection to it; Atsu engages in battles alongside wolves and chases elusive foxes to discover hidden places in nature. Once her quest for vengeance concluded, I found myself pondering what lay ahead for Ats. She struggles to envision a life beyond this path.

While the story may be simple at its core, it captivated me more than any other historical action game. Even after countless hours, I still feel a rush of excitement as Atsu deliberately unsheathes her sword at the onset of battle. The conclusion would be bittersweet.

Hubble Reveals Stunningly Detailed Image of Interstellar Comet 3i/Atlas

Recent analysis of new images from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope reveals that the nucleus of 3i/Atlas measures between 320 m (1,000 ft) and 5.6 km (3.5 miles).

3i/Atlas was discovered on July 1, 2025, by the Asteroid Land Impact Trastor Alt System (ATLAS) funded by NASA.

Its orbit is the most dynamically extreme among recorded solar system objects.

New observations from Hubble have provided astronomers with a more precise estimation of the comet’s solid icy nucleus size.

“The maximum diameter of the nucleus is 5.6 km, but it averages around 320 m,” stated David Jewitt, an astronomer from UCLA, along with his colleagues.

“Hubble’s images offer tighter constraints on the nucleus’s size compared to earlier ground-based measurements, although the solid core of the comet is not currently visible directly even with Hubble.”

“Data from other NASA missions, like Webb, TESS, Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, and WM Keck Observatory, will further enhance our understanding of comets, including their chemical composition.”

Hubble also detected indications of dust plumes ejected from the sun-warmed side of the comet, along with dust tails drifting away from the nucleus.

The new findings indicate a dust loss velocity that aligns with the first comet observed at roughly 480 million km (300 million miles) from the Sun.

This behavior closely resembles the characteristics of a previously seen sun-bound comet observed within our solar system.

A notable difference is that this interstellar visitor originates from planetary systems beyond our Milky Way galaxy.

3i/Atlas speeds through the solar system at an astonishing rate of 209,000 km (130,000 miles) per hour, marking the highest speed ever recorded for visitors to our solar system.

This remarkable velocity indicates that comets have been traversing interstellar space for billions of years.

The gravitational pull from countless stars and nebulae has contributed to its increased speed.

The longer 3i/Atlas journeys through space, the faster it moves.

“No one knows the origin of this comet; it’s like catching a glimpse of a bullet for a thousandth of a second,” Dr. Jewitt observed.

“You can’t accurately trace that back to determine where you commenced your path.”

“This latest interstellar traveler represents a previously undetected group of objects, enriching the narrative that has gradually unfolded.”

“This achievement is now possible due to the powerful Sky Survey capability we previously lacked. We’ve reached a new milestone.”

The team’s paper will be published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Stunningly Intimate Octopus Photos Take Home Aquatic Photography Award

This captivating and intimate image offers a unique view of the Caribbean reef octopus (Octopus Briareus), showcasing the mother and her potential offspring in the Blue Heron Bridge diving area near West Palm Beach, Florida.

Following mating, these solitary creatures retreat to seclude themselves while safeguarding their developing eggs. However, for Octopus Briareus and several other octopus species, this tale takes a tragic turn.

Once her mother octopus lays a batch of hundreds of eggs, she ceases to feed and dies shortly after the eggs hatch. Research conducted in 2022 illuminated this phenomenon. The optic nerve gland, the primary neuroendocrine hub of the octopus, regulates lifespan and reproduction in invertebrates, akin to the pituitary gland in vertebrates.

Octopus mothers can dramatically boost cholesterol production post-mating, leading to self-destructive spirals, although the reason behind this cycle remains elusive. One theory suggests that the octopus stops eating for her young.

The mother of the octopus by freelance nature photographer Kat Zhou triumphed in the Aquatic Life category at the Bigpicture Natural World Photography Competition, which invites both professional and amateur photographers to capture, narrate, and advocate for the conservation of Earth’s diverse life forms.

The overall grand prize went to photographer and conservationist Zhou Donglin for Lemur’s Tough Life, a breathtaking capture (shown below) taken at the Tsingy de Bemaraha Strict Nature Reserve in Madagascar. After a challenging trek through rugged terrain, Donglin documented a common brown lemur (Eulemur Fulvus) making a daring leap from one cliff to another—with her baby clinging on.

Next is Mud Skip by Georgina Steytler (shown below), depicting a fascinating reminder of life’s ancient past as a beautiful amphibian emerges from the mud. Steytler, a finalist in the Aquatic Life section of the competition, spent days at Goode Beach in Bloom, Western Australia to capture the precise moment when a Boleophthalmus pectinirostris leaped into the air.

The final image (shown below) appears reminiscent of a scene from another planet. In reality, Remaining in the Snow by plant photographer Ellen Woods, a finalist in the awards for landscapes, waterscapes, and flora, was captured near her home in Connecticut, in the northeastern USA.

It features skunk cabbage (Symplocarpus foetidus), often among the first plants to bloom at winter’s end. Notably, it can create its own microclimate, generating warmth of up to 23°C even when ambient temperatures remain below freezing.

This unique capability of thermal regulation protects the plant from frost damage and attracts beetles and fly pollinators drawn to its warmth and scent of carrion.

However, it’s not particularly pleasant; the name arises from its odor, likened to a skunk’s scent when the leaves are disturbed.

The winning photograph will be displayed at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco later this year.

Indie Underground Adventure: Animal Well – A stunningly crafted indie game

TThe dark mouth of a well has always been a fascinating focal point of human fascination. It is seen as both the source of life-sustaining water and the entrance to dangerous secrets. Our fables are replete with scenes in which curiosity gets the better of crying children, who gaze up into a halo of light that is forever damp and out of reach. Animal Well is an indie game seven years in the making that throws you into one of Twilight’s labyrinths, a complex of caverns constantly dripping and darting with furry, luminescent creatures. The goal is unstated but clear: explore, map, emerge. It’s an instantly engrossing quest.

You play as a shapeless blob, not the most ambitious cipher ever, but what it lacks in limbs and such it makes up for in courage and ingenuity. At first, all you can do is bravely leap between rocks and scaffolding, but over time you’ll gain new tools, gadgets and abilities, gaining access to previously inaccessible passages and tunnels. Bit by bit, the map will fill up as you explore deeper into the cave system.

Dangling lightbulbs swaying in the underground breeze illuminate the surrounding scenery, but you have to look closely at each scene to notice the half-submerged gears, pulleys, and levers that open up the world. Animal Well It’s a game about exploration, with puzzles and secrets, where your ingenuity matches that of the game designers. And when you find the solution, everything falls into place, the world opens up a little, you can dive a little deeper, and that’s when you feel the thrill of it all. Animal Well Excellent.

In an era when major video game companies are focused on developing video games with leisure-time, sport-like features — seasons, passes, endless matches — what a treat to see a game this complex and restrained come along. This is a perfectly crafted contraption with a beginning, middle and end, designed to inspire joy and build culture — thankfully not shareholder value.
