I Can’t Stop Playing This Addictive Game of Tumbling Down the Mountain

For the last week, I’ve been experiencing a bizarre hiking adventure instead of engaging in normal life activities, all thanks to a frustrating character known as Nate. In
Baby Steps, you control this hapless individual who has spent 35 years doing nothing but lounging in his parents’ basement and binge-watching anime. When he decides to put on an adult costume, he finds himself at the foot of a surreal mountain adorned with suggestive imagery. Your task is to guide him to the summit by manipulating his legs independently, using the controller’s triggers to lift and the analog sticks to place them.

The challenge level is off the charts. Occasionally, Nate moves down gentle slopes, but more often than not, he navigates narrow planks, ascends dunes in tiny steps, and clings to rocky ledges with his toes. He repeatedly stumbles and falls, whimpering as he slides down muddy slopes and sandy shores, while his onesie gets increasingly filthy. I keep getting up and attempting again, occasionally interrupted by an Australian man with wild eyes or a pants-less donkey character who mocks me but extends a hand of assistance—only for Nate to angrily decline.

The moment you lose focus, Nate loses his as well. After three hours of this outrageous experience, falling off my board into a river, I trudged back to the campsite from where my hike began. All I managed to accomplish was locating a silly propeller hat, which only added to my burdens as I had to stop and retrieve it after each tumble. I rarely feel like crying while gaming, but the sight of that campsite nearly broke me.

Picture enduring these setbacks for hours, only to end up in a dimly lit space filled with a lantern that Nate inexplicably keeps dropping. It’s pitch dark unless you backtrack for it, and navigating the escalator has to be done flawlessly; otherwise, you’re treated to seconds of watching Nate’s backside as he slowly descends. Following that, the exit is a labyrinthine path on a sandy ledge where Nate’s feet continually seem to get lost. I found myself stuck there for so long, grappling with my thoughts, rising frustration, and Nate’s company. Every chapter of Baby Steps takes the sadistic challenge to new levels.

So why persist? Aside from the undeniable fact that I probably need to unpack my issues in therapy, I refuse to let this game defeat me. It’s more than just playful slapstick (watching Nate tumble down a mudslide is sheer comedy). The improvised dialogue and absurd scenarios are genuinely hilarious. The developers voice the characters themselves, and every cutscene offers a delightful break from the chaos. There’s even an optional desert challenge where players scale sandy slopes to collect icy trophies before they melt. As Nate continuously returns to the ice cream vendor in deepening despair, even the developer’s voice starts to waver.

While it may seem like a cruel game where we laugh at this unfortunate man’s misadventures, there’s a deeper meaning. Even though I often found myself frustrated with Nate and considered quitting to avoid witnessing his constant flailing, I gradually began to empathize with him. He’s the epitome of a societal loser, yet he’s trying. In spite of his intense social anxiety, masculine insecurities, and clear self-hatred, he attempts to put one foot in front of the other in a poignant metaphor for life.

Upon finishing a chapter, you encounter a melancholic 8-bit mini-game summarizing Nate’s past: his disheartened parents, successful sister, and lackluster romantic encounters. As I progressed, I could see how Nate arrived at his current state. Although I wasn’t as personally involved as some players might be, I developed a protective instinct towards him and didn’t want to abandon him, no matter the cost.

This game also elicited my worst tendencies. I cursed at Nate every time my foot slipped from what I thought was a secure situation. But among all the discouraging moments, there were instances where I painfully felt gratitude after finally mustering the patience to push Nate forward in his journey. “Baby Steps” is whimsical yet profound. Having played games for three decades, I can confidently say I’ve never encountered anything quite like this. For a game focused on failure, it prompted surprisingly deep reflection and emotion.

You’ll need a good dose of self-deprecation to fully appreciate all that this game has to offer, but that’s not a high aspiration. After about 10 hours, I was determined to finish it. Along the way, I encountered a vast spiral staircase reaching into the clouds. To the right: a perilous cliffside path, ominously referred to as “Manbreaker” by an Australian guide. “You can’t do it. You’re gonna fail miserably for the next five years… You’ll eventually get so exasperated that you’ll just ascend these damn stairs.”

“I vow to never ascend these stairs,” Nate replied indignantly.

I gazed at the path ahead, rolling upwards into obscurity. I imagined potential slips and falls even before finding my footing. For the following days, I would hurl myself at this rock wall, envisioning my life progressing incrementally with each ticking hour. I pictured my partner and kids entering the living room, astonished and concerned, finding me once again playing Baby Steps and making no headway whatsoever.

Screw it. I’m climbing those stairs.

You may recognize it: these songs are often featured in AI-generated fantasies featuring human bodies with oddly detailed veins, reminiscent of cartoons, alongside hefty felines or equally muscular cats. Cats deceive their lovers, fall pregnant, and seek vengeance in bizarrely condensed melodramas. Much like traditional soap operas, these videos are incredibly addictive.

For example, this one. While diligently performing his tasks, Mr. Whiskers dons a red flannel shirt but accidentally ends up severing his legs while attempting to show off woodwork. He gets fired (evidently, the signs around the warehouse explicitly mention that all workers must “work with both hands”), his wife divorces him, and he struggles to piece together the fragments of his hard-knock life within 30 seconds. It all seems fine until his petite ex-wife plots to kill him, only to end up falling into a puddle and facing humiliation.

In another video, a baby tumbles into shark-infested waters, and a buff cat (dressed in Capri pants) comes to the rescue, adopting the child and taking it back to a mansion in Beverly Hills. Each narrative is neatly packaged, kitschily over-the-top, and unnaturally swift, offering millions of viewpoints.

The oversized felines in these video scenes suggest that Rev. Whisker and Mr. Whiskers aren’t just ordinary cats. They also embody certain human traits. Mogie, who sometimes resides in luxurious mansions, drives convertibles, and possesses a rugged, athletic physique, seems to be living the high life. Yet, many face regular struggles, illnesses, or dangers, despite their seemingly glamorous existences and comically pristine appearances, all set to eerie pop music underscoring their decline.

They find themselves tossed from ships, moaning amid house fires, dealing with substance issues, getting arrested, and being bullied. This prompts the question: Are these videos merely 30-second representations of warning signs? Are they about excess, betrayal, and redemption? Is Shakespeare somehow intertwined with Euripides? Are they modern-day parables?


Each video is marked by unfortunate domestic disasters: accidentally launching kittens into ceiling fans, or a cheating wife who neglects her husband’s pleas for attention. It’s an epic quest, entirely revolving around fur.

And it doesn’t take long for things to take a darker turn. In one unsettling video, Cat Rady finds himself submerged in Southern-Picked Cotton, just before being assaulted by a white cat clad in overalls. Each clip is disturbing, occasionally violent, and perpetually melodramatic, often garnished with bizarre AI-generated characters including erratic eagles and underwater sharks, all while the cats maintain a human-like physique and a bipedal swagger.

In another, “Luigi Meowgione” suffers as he watches his cat grandmother collapse in a grocery store. With her health insurance denied, he confronts the “Evil Corp Insurance” company, taking matters into his own hands and filling the building with Catnip gas. As a security guard falls victim to a grotesque case of Munch, Luigi Meowgione cleverly hacks the system, seemingly poised to confront the CEO… but we’re left hanging as part two hasn’t yet been revealed.

Ultimately, the Internet has always been enamored with felines possessing human characteristics. “Can I just have a cheeseburger?” This iconic phrase resonates because it encapsulates moments of feline discontent, showcasing the underlying personality. So, are these miaow-miaow videos the final evolution of anthropomorphized kittens? Or are they merely reproducing age-old motifs?

Few can easily embrace the desire for revenge, yet it’s undeniable that some of us are drawn to it.

From President Donald Trump’s advocacy against what he perceives as the “cancel culture” in social media, to the potential motivation behind the cutting down of the iconic British Sycamore Gap Tree, the concept of revenge certainly appears to be more influential than love as a force for change in the world. One might even ponder if it borders on an addiction.

James Kimmel Jr. is passionate about uncovering solutions. Convinced that if our world cannot become more compassionate, we must take action. His new book, The Science of Revenge: Understanding the World’s Most Fatal Addiction – and How to Overcome It, represents a culmination of his efforts over the past decade to delve deep into the neuroscience of revenge and its devastating costs.

One cannot overlook Kimmel’s impressive credentials as a psychiatry instructor at Yale University, where he leads research on motivation and behavioral control. As a former civil litigator who dealt with non-criminal disputes, he witnessed firsthand how the legal system can be manipulated to settle personal scores and punish perceived adversaries, particularly by those in positions of wealth and influence.

Kimmel gained insight into these impulses through his experiences. Growing up in rural Pennsylvania during the early 1980s, he faced bullying and had his family extorted. Their dogs were killed, and after an explosion involving their mailbox, a teenage Kimmel found himself grappling with these pressures, though he refrained from acting violently.

Nevertheless, he admits that his unresolved grievances led him to pursue a career in law—a “professional revenge business.” Following a mental breakdown, he began to study what he refers to as “revenge addiction,” ultimately shifting his focus toward psychiatric treatment.

Today, Kimmel identifies as a “recovering revenge addict” and a determined researcher aiming to present a case for viewing “obsessive revenge” as both an addiction and a neurological disorder.

Kimmel posits that the desire for revenge is experienced in some brains similarly to the effects of drugs.

He argues that such cravings activate the brain’s reward pathways, blunting impulse control and acting as a biological response akin to pain relief and pleasure. This notion not only clarifies the “urge to retaliate” but also implies a possible method to mitigate violence. By identifying individuals who often feel victimized, professionals may preemptively address grievances, potentially curbing mass shootings and other tragic acts of violence.

To substantiate his assertions, Kimmel references numerous studies on reward, revenge, and forgiveness. He takes an insightful approach toward their limitations and addresses skepticism from experts.

However, his interpretation of revenge as a catalyst for “all wars, murders, and assaults throughout human history” could polarize readers and spark debate.

Kimmel acknowledges the role of “genetic predispositions, early traumas, or psychosocial factors,” asserting that revenge addiction shouldn’t excuse violent behaviors. Yet, this notion can mistakenly arise, particularly when he compares a potentially lethal “yearning for revenge” to the seriousness of heart attacks.

This perspective may be perplexing and insensitive. Kimmel is most compelling when recounting stories of individuals who have freed themselves from lives dominated by hatred. Yet, his fixation on revenge as the sole origin of evil tends to overlook the complexities of other contributing factors, such as misogyny and childhood abuse.

His analysis of the motivations behind the actions of mass murderers and historical figures like Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, and Mao Zedong feels overly simplistic when framed solely through the lens of revenge addiction. While revenge has undoubtedly appeared as a motivating force throughout history, Kimmel might be too close to his central theme to fully appreciate its multifaceted nature.

UK Bill Could Mandate Social Media Platforms to Develop Less Addictive Content for Under-16s
